The Robot Wars, the REAL ones, are already upon us, and the American Military are researching having an "Armoured, Independent Internet in the sky", to control their robot warriors, are we seeing the birth of the real Skynet?
For an overview, check this out, it's Pt1, Pt2 is on the site.

Was Terminator a glimpse of our real future?

People haven't learnt lessons from the two world wars, it is no surprise they're not listening, they want an easy option to win wars, that is including using killer robots

The distinction between this and The Terminator is that the terminators were based on neural processors and we don't have that technology yet. This military internet thingy is not going to control the US' nuclear arsenal either, as Skynet did. Nor is it likely to decide to randomly exterminate all humans.

In Terminator 3, Skynet is handed control of every computer on Earth in an attempt to destroy a virus. This is not the same by any stretch.

Yeah good point. If they don't learn from the actual wars. Well, it makes me pretty comfortable with my disappointment in the human race to be honest.

It'll come back to bite humanity in the butt. And well, I guess at least we'll know who to blame.

It's all gotta start somewhere.

I like science fiction too but fears of robots are just that, science fiction. What they are proposing is pre-programmed drones about as smart as a cockroach if that much.
Even if they were smarter there is no way they can destroy humanity. They would have to be self repairing, self replicating and a power source they can replenish on their own. Not only that but they would have to have their programming so radically altered as to become the evil terminators. So far we do not have anything remotely that sophisticated. Maybe some day but not now.

Was it just me that got the point of - it all seemed so innocent, we had it under control UNTIL s*** hit the fan about the Terminator movies?

With the constant advancements in technology, the "future" is only ever just around the corner.

We can always hard code the Asimov laws of robotics if people are really that worried about it.

I guess my point is 1898 Curie's discovery of radium - 1945 - Hiroshima, Nagasaki - Now - Nukes, that make WW2 look like firecrackers.

Maybe we should hand over control to the machines. Why not?

If they do wipe us out, well it would just be saving time as we seem to be doing a pretty good job of that ourselves. Yeah, why not.

The Three Laws inevitably led to robots enslaving humans in order to protect them from themselves.
