I have never understood the reason why so many women become such victims but still return to the marital home and are frequently further abused or die in some cases.

yes i have been there and it is not so easy to just up and walk...for one there is normally alot of mental abuse which cuts away at any self esteem you have leaving you feeling worthless...so you believe you deserve what is happening to you..you believe it is your fault..and to walk away leaving everything is very hard as it becomes all you know in the end up and alot of the time...the man has control over you..i honestly have a hard time with it as i never thought it would happen to me..and like you said the same..but it dosnt just happen over night they wear you down to nothing x

I suppose I can understand that to some degree but if kids are involved surely it's sensible to just up and leave immediately.

I got my a** beat in ways that would get my parents in trouble if we were in the US at the time. But that's just what happens here, and the kids end up just like the American kids.

Because putting a family in sheltered accommodation and giving them a help line number generally isnt enough to break the cycles of abuse.

Victims of domestic violence need the kind of therapy that just is not available. They need re-programming and that takes a lot of time. Often guilt and lack of money and support pulls them back into the violent situation. Better the devil they know. And some people are so broken they do not even have the strength any more.

without a penny to your name its not easy...i would of left straight away had it been the kids he hurt..it wasnt done in front of them but i know now they knew as they have told me...im lucky to have got out when i did and am thankful to those who helped me and agree if you can get out do it as soon as possible and when its safe to do so as it only gets worse..you become a person who ends up believing everything they say..and they make you feel you are no good so i would not of been able to cope with my young kids at that point...it is a terrible thing and im glad to see new enforcements coming in so the police have more of a right to prosecute than they did before...i never presecuted him but the police did and i am glad they did xx

Yes it was classed as usual marital behaviour years ago over here, I grew up with it as a kid and you never forget it but we were never hit, just mom. I'm glad they now investigate but women are then reluctant to press charges.

I have. You ask why women become victims? Because when we're in that situation, we panic and don't know what to do to free ourselves from it. When I went through it, I just wanted him to stop so I didn't do anything to provoke him further. The more that I didn't do anything about it, the more worked up he got. The last time he beat me, I stabbed him on the shoulder with a pair of scissors. Never again did he touch me. Well, I turned him in so that helped.

Abuse of women is much more prominent but you're right, men get abused too and it's just as wrong.

I had a friend named Tom who was telling me about a "vicious dog that attacked him", he was showing me all kinds of bruises and welts which were all over him while his wife laughed and laughed. After about fifteen minutes he told me that she (his wife) beat the h*ll out of him. Nothing ever became of it and she was never brought to justice.

Maybe that's true to some extent but a man is more than capable of protecting himself but women more often than not cant do that.
