Interesting topic. Living in the south I know firsthand of those that still fly the confederate flag. There's some hardcore southerns that have carried the tenacity of their forefathers that fought in the war. So they aren't happy the way things are and quite frankly that the south lost altogether. It's almost like they'd be willing to fight themselves. Whether or not slavery is an issue never comes under discussion in public circles, but they do want to live their own way and keep government out of their lives.
Now that one point I can see. But let's just say that for the kinds of people I'm talking about, the way they want to live and the way I want to live is, well...different.

When I was a kid, you could still find Confederate money. We traded it around kind of like baseball cards. The thing that gave it value was the notion (however childish and misguided) that the South would rise again, and we'd all be rich. One kid actually had a $100 dollar bill!

Speaking of misguided, there is a black guy from Asheville who used to be very active in the NAACP. There was a huge feud over whether the Confederate battle flag should be outlawed. For related reasons nobody quite understood, he quit the NAACP, donned a Confederate uniform (complete with forage cap) and started marching around all over the place with the stars and bars over his shoulder. He kept it up off and on for years! I would see him every once in a while, eyes straight ahead, battle face that said he truly believed Gettysburg was just over the next hill.

I am a southern man of rural roots. I do not own a Confederate flag. Haven't seen a Confederate bill in forty years. No civil war for me! It is an oxymoron anyway. Besides, we outsource all our civil wars now!

Why on earth would you have one of those. The old "united we stand" thing not still ring true?
America a land formed by immigrants, with a common purpose, speaking the same language (Putting aside the number of Americans I've met whilst over there who seem to complain bitterly about Mexicans). It just doesn't make sense if in a land formed in near enough the same way - all settlers, building the same towns, some states wanted to split off.

In the UK we have some nutters wanting an independent Scotland, but even that's more logical than in America, because at least there is some (perhaps misguided) historical grudge - over something which happened 800 years ago ( ), but they're a minority and apart from a few, it seems to be more based on "we heet the english" than sense.

Meh, how about an independent Yorkshire

Actually it is a strange thought. Yes we are a divided country today from what my parents describe. As for interfering in other countries civil war I don't know where we are going. I hope it does not backfire against us. As far as Civil War in the US is concerned I think it is more a matter of a fight over resources and opportunities. I hope it remains a war of words and remains civil.
I certainly can't see Texas break away, I love the state too much. I won't allow it to happen.

I think it very well may be! The reasonable against the irrational, seem to be heading for physical confrontation. Even though they won't admit it the extreme right wingers hate Obama for his race. Which is reminiscent of the causus belli of the first American Civil War!

Here in Texas the governor, one Rick Perry is even talking of Texas secceding from the Union again! Alaskans are also flirting with that idea. The first Civil War was fought after South Carolina secceded, even though it was far from a unanimous opinion, that they do so! Sam Houston famous Texan hero, was opposed to seccesion,as was Robert E. Lee!
But the states secceded anyway!

It's amazing that the USofA has kept it all together for so long considering the rest of the world's record.

I'm fairly sure if California and Newyork became thier own country, the rest of the united states would be thrown into 3rd world status.
