Despite billions spent by the enforcement industry, people still smoke weed. The only possible reason for it to be illegal is that a lot of people have vested interests. Police are worried about their budgets being cut and private prisons would be only occupied by actual criminals. It is so hypocritical for a society awash in gambling and booze to persecute folks for indulging in a mild vice. If it were taxed and regulated like booze, society would only benefit.

You notice that you never see a 80 year old granny with pancreatic cancer smoking a blunt in the mosh pit at a Slipknot concert!

It should be legalised, but not handed over to business. It's a highly addictive drug, and usage should be phased out like tobacco. The government should distribute it to addicts for free. It would save a lot of money.

It's not as addictive as cigarettes, and doesn't have near the chemicals.

and I have never met a pot addict.. pot head maybe... addict..no such thing.

The govt would make quite a bit of money off it, they pull hell of money from Cali in taxing the dispensaries.

I've never known Pot to be the only drug that people get hooked on or commit crimes to feed the drug habit. Actually, I've never heard of Pot-heads to be convicted of muggings or brutal in home invasions to "feed their drug habit" Mostly, pot heads "get creative" and build all kinds of stupid s***. Usually, if they "plan to do something" they usually end up forgetting what it was they started out to do.

Out of all the drugs, Pot seems to be the less dangerous but by no means is it harmless. It does kill brain cells with long term use.....yes, I know, alcohol and cigs are not beneficial to ones health either, and prolonged or extensive use/abuse of either can be harmful in many ways.

As you stated, there is so much money invested in police operations regarding Pot, but I would think there is much more involved in operations having to do with coke, ice, smack and all the other hard-core drugs. THE MAN doesn't want to lose "control" of any sort it seems

What would happen if pot were legal and addiction was not a crime but a medical problem?

I'm not a pot smoker, so I'm not blowing my own horn, so to speak, on this subject. I agree that it makes no sense. If they did legalize it, it might boost the economy a little bit.

Cannabis is a habit forming drug and its use can lead to depression, paranoia, lethargy, BUT, it is far less dangerous than a socially accepted, legal and promoted drug, Alcohol!
Hypothetically, if you put 4 people in an Amsterdam coffee house and supplied them with cannabis they would get stoned giggle a lot, eat a lot then go home. Put the same 4 people in a pub with unlimited alcohol and the chances are at least 3 would end up fighting, they would probably be throwing up or collapsing into an alcoholic coma.
If anything should be de-legalised it is alcohol, not cannabis
