My computer freezes quite frequently. What causes this? And is there anyway of turning it off without un-plugging when this occures? Help!

Is there anything in particular running when it freezes? Try going into task manager and see if any programs are using an unusual amount of memory. If you're using windows vista, it might be worth using the basic theme and getting rid of the windows sidebar, which might help speed things up a bit

when it freezes, try holding down the Ctrl Alt and Delete buttons.

You can just turn it off at the wall if the button won't work it won't hurt it,it's like if you have a blackout, but also do a full system scan to see if there's a problem.

Thanks for your reply. Can I ask a question?
On your physical memory how do i change the usage of my computer say from 45% to 20?% for example to create more memory from my hard drive?

Do you have lots of air conditioners in the room? Turn a couple off or bring a heater into the room.

To decrease the amount of memory being used, decrease the number of applications and services running. You can control this by using Msconfig which is an application built into Windows.... just type Msconfig in the "run" box. You can also use "Task Manager" to shut down applications and services.

Hold in the power off button for ten seconds or your system may have a restart button on the front. Just out of interest what browzer do you use?

You probably got a lot of background programmes running, probably a virus/trojan/malware, though around about 40-50% is normal amount of memory being used at anytime, that is also how many programmes you are running at the time

Was using explorer, now using firefox, which has helped the problem but not rectified it.
