What does everyone think about George W. Bush's signing of the minimum wage increase and does anyone think Obama should have postponed this increased this year considering the economy?
Don't people know raising minimum wages would cause more unemployment, higher prices, and hurt small businesses?
Who gains from this? Just asking.

I think its about time it raised.

seriously trying to support yourself, much less a family on minimum wage was almost impossible.

and you know most businesses only bump up those at the bottom, not all the ones making more than minimum, so it really isn't that dramatic of an increase.
And prices going higher is what caused the need to raise minimum in the first place, its inflation it has to go up eventually, it had been a long time since a raise when Bush signed it.

I think smaller business's should be exempt from the raise or else they may go under but the bigger companies who award the big boss's massive bonus's should stump up the cash.

Increased minimum wages is good news to those who earn the minimum wage. It should also remind people that not only the elite are worthy of a helping hand. The economy is in a tough situation, but little by little, we'll get back up on our feet.

I agree with it is tough, to say the least, to live on minimum wage, but I am wondering, would .70 an hour raise help if all businesses raised their prices to absorb the increase? I heard that fast food chains are already talking about adding an extra .50cent for each meal. Who's helping who with the increase? More tax dollars produced in more income.
Have people forgotten that you have to start on the bottom of any position before moving up the ladder? Most people in low wage jobs do very little because they think they deserve more.
I don;t care if I dig ditches for 8.00 an hour. I will do my very best each and every day. If the company doesn't notice, others will and I will get other offers.
This actually happened to me. I worked most of my life for just enough money to squeak by and raised a family on my income alone. We didn't have play stations, tv's in every room, and thankfully, cell phones were non existent.
You look in most homes that have low incomes and I bet you will find children with their own cell phones and personal computers, etc.
I do know it is hard to make a living, but doesn't someone agree that you should live within your means until you are able to better yourself?

I think if the US minimum wage actualy came close to how much it costs to live in America, it would matter.

But seeing as the cost of living is different from area to area and the minimum wage isn't. The idea of one reflecting the other is just plain retarded.

I couldn't agree more. Everyone blames the banks for the financial situation and yes they deserve some of that blame but they aren't forcing people to take on more credit than they can afford to repay. I complain about money sometimes but I do live within my means. I don't owe a penny to anyone and I like it that way

Well, when I wasn't living at home, I only got a computer when I could afford it, and the first thing to go was the cable and internet if I couldn't pay a bill. My cell phone was shut off next *until my mother made sign on with her family plan because she didn't like not being able to get ahold of me* My children still do not have their own cell phones.

I'd like to know where you find jobs that will pay you more than 8 bucks an hour because you do good work? Around here, all good work gets you is told to work through your unpaid lunch break cause those other morons don't know how to do it right. Oh, and sometimes, it results in them finding ways to pay you less because they want you on the job more, but can't afford it.

I do commend you and appreciate your values. Most people are not like you. I employee 10 people at my work and most of whom I hire at $10.00 or more per hour because I used to think you get what you pay for, and I thought that experience should count for something. I am still surprised that wages do not affect work ethics.
I now hire based on attitude. I can train a monkey all aspects of doing the work, but I cannot train a monkey to smile and be polite to the customers and build a business.
Good attitude and good work ethics used to mean something in this world. Sometimes I feel like a dinosaur, but wouldn't it be nice if we still lived in that world?

Ultimately, raising the minimum wage in this country is mainly going to work to drive inflation. I wouldn't place the blame entirely on Bush though, I seem to recall a Dem. House and Senate during his last years in office. How quickly people forget.

I am sure you have seen many of my threads. I am a Bush supporter on most of his Presidency. This was his bill and it is his fault, but Obama could have and should have overturned this especially considering the economy.

Some states recently as of January 1st 2009 raised minimum wage...my state did...it raised it from $7.00 to $7.25.

Now federal minimum wage is $7.25

Not as big of an impact as many think as most states already have higher and now (a leveling) out with federal minimum wage.

But most states already are higher than the federal minimum wage...
