So when I was talking with my friend Charlene (she's mixed), she said she'd rather be called black than african american.

She said:

"I wasn't BORN in Africa, I was born here, I'm black."

It's the same with with Indian screen writer and poet, Sherman Alexie. He said he'd rather be called Indian than Native American.

Your thoughts?

I don't think I've ever met anyone who's objected to being called black.

There are also plenty of people who are actual African-Americans and are light skinned.

I think you should just go with what the person prefers

I think they should be referred to as black, if they want. I have a lot of black friends and they don't feel comfortable being called african american. They're black just like I'm white. It's easier like that.

African-American, Irish-American, Italian-American,whatever-American. I'm PA Dutch, which is German-American, or more correctly Slavic-German-American, or technically Norse-Slavic-German-American, and that's just my mother's side. I just call myself American, because that's what I am, I was born here.

I often wonder if people in other countries call themselves things like "Ottoman-Italian" or "Thai-Mandarin".

African-American is just a result of the PC police unnecessarily obfuscating things.

Well, I'm not American, so I can't speak for black Americans, but when I'm on a website and the only option for black people is African-American, THAT pisses me off

You know I never even thought of that? How silly of me.

What is on forms you have to fill out your race and stuff? "Black" ? Or is it another term?
