If a object is moving at speeds of up to 3 times 10 to the seventh meters per second, how many miles per hour would it be moving?

It's from the movie the day the earth stood still, a group of scientists were told that UFO was heading towards earth, the man in charge of the briefing said that it was traveling at the speed mentioned above.

Okay this is probably wrong but, 6710.796 MPH?

Or it's 60397.2, depending on the wording of the question and where the parenthesis would be.

Yeah that's definitely wrong.

Amusingly, Google can do it!

Duh!!! I read the question but for some reason my brain processed it as 10 to the 3rd power not the 7th!

A meter is about a yard.

An object moving 25 million yards every second is only going about 5 miles per hour?

No, the answer is just over 67 million mph. As provided by Google and verified by my own math:

3*10^7 m/s * 60 s/min * 60 min/hr * 100 cm/m * (1 in/2.54 cm) * (1 foot/12 in) * (1 mile/5280 feet) = 67108088.76 miles/hr

I'm not exactly sure if you write the problem as 3(10^7) or (3*10)^7.

If its 3(10^7) then the answer is 5.17809

If its (3*10)^7 then the answer is 3774.82

Did it again and it's 67108088.761632072 MPH. Verified w/ Google too!

"Three times ten to the seventh" means 3 * 10^7, or 3e7.

I'd like to see the math for this.

You're off by seven significant digits.

Basic reality checks are always necessary when you get to the end of a solution.

Ask yourself: "Does it make sense that an object traveling 30,000,000 meters every second is going about 5 miles per hour?"

Clearly it doesn't - 30 million meters is 30 thousand kilometers, which is obviously more than 5 miles. And it's traveling 30 thousand kilometers every second - 3600 times that distance every hour.

I read it the question wrong...I though it was just up 7 exponents, then doing a simple conversion from meters to miles.

I missed where it said to the seventh METER. Lol

30000000 meters per second is equal to 67,108,088.76 miles (statute) per hour from https://www.sciencemadesimple.com/conversions.html
