Because I don't meet up with a bunch of people to discuss our beliefs and have a glass of wine.

Actually there is huge difference by definition.

"Cult definitions coined from 1920 onward[1] refer to a cohesive social group and their devotional beliefs or practices, which the surrounding population considers to be outside of mainstream cultures."

I would love to be able to call christianity a cult...but it's not

It would be if it hadn't so many adherents, wouldn't it?

Cult is a word that covers a very wide spectrum of definitions that the word it's self can't be used to equate to religion. You can have a "religious cult" which could of course be a religion but would you call a "musical cult" a religion?

I read the Bible on my own, and pray on my own. I believe, personally, that God is who he says he is in the Bible, and that he sent his Son for my redemption, and the redemption of the human race.

All of this, of course, is own my own.

So, yes, you can have faith without leadership!

There isnt a big difference to me, both are about believing in supernatural gibberish, one is just more acceptable then the other in society.

There may not be a lot of difference by definition but 'cults' are not good in any sense.

Yes, religion has you being preached to about a certain way of life and following' Gods Word', but Priests, Ministers and the like DO NOT have a group of 'followers' kill themselves in mass suicide/murder pacts.

We all know that hundreds of thousands, millions probably have been killed by those 'Doing God's Work' over the centuries, that's a fact. Cult leaders seem to have taken it to a different level.......Am I making sense at all??

The only difference between religion and cult is size and acceptance.

The same way the only difference between mythology and religious beliefs is whether or not the person believes and has faith in the stories.

Hmmmm interesting!

To me a cult is hierarchy usually that consist of men that tell others follow me and do as I say do. The followers are not allowed to "question or challenge" the leader's way of thinking.

This doesn't mean following a cult or religion which to me are the same thing will end in your death or mass suicide.

Seeing how it was brought up....the example of the Jamestown follower wound up dead. Initially you couldnt tell any of it members they were in a cult and they would argue they were christians and believers of the faith. They believed in God and heaven.

The Bagwan...[soory for the misspelling] and the orange people were also "religious" believed in a God and a heaven, same thing.

Jesus Christ was not a christian but a jew. No where in the bible does it say "he" wanted to create a new religion or did he himself refer to himself as a christian! The religion was created AFTER his death. So I dont understand how when people refer to the Bible as being God's word and scribes come along and say the Old testament in no longer valid some people believe this.

All religious prophets were from the east, not the west! Yet christian catholic look to a POPE for this. How is he any difference than any other cult leader. There were NO POPES in the bible!

You were not born with "instincts" of a concept of a GOD. That comes from language which we all were taught. You were told that there was a Easter Bunny and a Santa Claus and as a child you "believed and had faith" that Santa would come down your chimney on christmas even if your home didn't have one! Using logic and reason you soon learned this wasn't the case. People believe in a GOD because they are being told that he exist even when NO ONE on this planet has ever seen or met him.

I don't understand this, in every other situation in your life you DON"T rely on 1 book as fact, yet when it comes to religion you can only fall back on a book!

There is no difference in following a religion or being in a cult they both a run the same way. Someone tells you what is and you buy into that and you know if you stray from that view you will be outcasted just like you would in a cult!

There is a difference by definition for most people & the dictionary defines it differently too, with respect.

Cults differ from religion by most dictionary definitions in that they are generally considered to be a faith that is negative, false, or extremist - and that they have a negative impact on members. Also, one leader as opposed to many, who is usually very charismatic, usually heads them up. The link to a definition of a cult by dictionary.com is attached.

I guess your POV around cults is determined by whether you are religious by nature.

Hi Proactive.

I am not in a cult at all. I don't have any building I go to. I bought myself a Bible (well a few actually), because I wanted to learn about God on my own, without someone's interference.

I don't recognize any kind of religious authority over my life. I only read my bible on my own, and pray to God on my own, and worship
God on my own.

I don't need a building, or another person to tell me how to live right for God.

So, how am I in a cult?

Hmmm typical! You arent as smart or clever as you think you are.

Im using Cult vs Religion not the individual follower. A person acting alone is a threat to no one but their self.

When using the word hierarchy means your talking about more than one person.

The fact that you claim not to "belong" to a secular religious group even though you can your "concept" of what a GOD is form the various religions text you choose to buy and read,

Books that atheist choose to read GOD isnt mentioned in them! You may not be in a cult but the religious books you read are,,In My Opinion, like GOD have no basis in fact, with all do respect.

I tend to think of a cult as a group of people who have given up the ability to think for themselves and let the hierarchy do it for them. They may be brainwashed by the leader/s. Cult leaders usually forbid anyone from acting on their own.

Religions generally allow people enough breathing room to make their own decisions and carry on with their lives. Cults prefer isolation so that no one can interfere with their intent.
