A Police Officer was shot dead by unknown assailants last night in Northern Ireland while investigating suspicious activity near Lismore Manor in Craigavon. The Real IRA, a dissident Irish Republican group who claimed responsibility for the deaths of two soldiers at the weekend, have not yet said that they carried out this attack.

Sounds like your gun controls are not working.

How many people where shot in your little old part of the worls this week, then if you want to discuss gun control start your own thread.

The real IRA will pull out all their meagre resources to grab the headlines following the death of the two soldiers in Antrim. Have a dozen men and a few guns can do a lot of damage and make it look as if they have an "army". These are a few out and outers who have no mandate for doing what they have done and no plan for the future other than more killing.

They have to be stopped.

Its a terrible shame to see northern ireland on the news again in negative light. I assume the real ira are a small group of troublemakers? I dont know.

SO many people in Ireland have been through so much and they want peace.

all sides of the political spectrum in the north of ireland have come out in unity in condemning the atrocoties there, the peace process although not perfect has come a very long way indeed, and is what the vast majority of people want, both catholics and protestants.

It is not in the interests of the republican parties to see this escalate, and after hearing gerry adams (sinn fein) on the news, he pledged to do everything he can to help bring those responsible to justice.

lets just hope that a minority cannot derail all the good work that has been done, and lets hope that those responsible are caught, the last thing we need is for loyalists to again take up the gun in retalliation, this is what the real ira want, i hope and pray that loyalist groups stand down and let the law take its course.

those who carried out such attacks are cowards,

Thank you charles, but this isn't your thread. You start your own. Maybe Oboma will sit down with the IRA and open a dialog with them, if you ask him nice.

Not sure why you received negs for that. I think it's a very fair point.

The Continuity IRA, not the Real IRA (what's the difference ), has claimed responsibility for this murder.

So sad but it's not going to upset the peace process. People on both sides of the Irish sea have learned a lot of lessons. I am hoping that the Irish people themselves will track down the scumbags who did this and hand them over.

the continuity and the real ira are different groupings, they operate to there own rules, and number about 150 to each group, they will be defeated because there own people (irish republicans) dont want anything to do with them, they are isolated in their own sad world in which they seem to think that bloodshed will win the day,( although it did for sinn feinn/ ira they are now in government!), and there is no chance of loyalist paramilatries returning to the gun for the same reason ,their people dont want it either. everybody here in northern ireland just wants peace and a normal existence, although many beleive this current upsurge in violence may not be over just yet and the c/ira and r/ira will prob strike again, i noticed today an increase in police activity on the streets which hopefully will curtail their murderous activities.

This is not a good news, i was very surprised when i found out about this, yesterday and this morning, another death, i really hope that the tension wont escalate, i dont think that people want to go back to the very hard time of that war if i may call this, that way.

I hope it will stop, it was hell in the past, and the peoples over there, need to live in peace

There are a few groups collectively referred to as dissent republican. They include the "Real IRA", the "Continuity IRA" and a few not even on the radar but security experts estimate that there are less than 100 members in total in all these groups put together.
They have no political agenda.
They have no political mandate.
They just want to continue with an armed assault with the aim of the British government withdrawing from Ireland. They haven't a snowball's chance in hell but in the process those 100 can create pure bloody hell and fear for the rest of us.
They offer no future for our young people and need to be taken out of the equation.

Two men have just been arrested over last night's murder of the 48 year old police man. Let's hope it's the right men and they get put away for a long time.

Let's hope this is the last of these killings, I feel for the families of those who were murdered.

There are police check points at key points around the city tonight and they are out in the armoured landrovers again.
Let's hope they stop these muppets before they make any further attacks.
