Classical flautist in various ensembles since the age of about 8 I couldn't have done it if I didn't.

I do like military music though. Nothing like a fantasia of british sea songs to put a smile on your face

I learned the piano when I was young. I don't play now but I do love listening to it, too.

Is that 'fantasia' that is played at the last night of the proms? Or am I thinking of something else?

the one instrument that keeps eluding me
I know the structure/theory behind it and how it works yet I still cannot play it.
I'm picking up the guitar much faster than the piano and I'm doing it by ear.

Well done, I can't pick music up by ear. I became a good touch typist and I think that was through learnig the piano. One thing leads to another...

Yeah that's it. The one where they start blowing horns and bobbing up and down

Love it! The kids love it too. It's the one time of year when they say 'yeah, we'll watch the tv with you'.

Learning by ear and learning written music is just so completely different!

I was able to do both, but preferred sheet music and could only ever learn by ear on the Bb flute.

I'm with you there. I've promised myself for years that I'll do it and one day I'll get there. By this time I'll drag the family with me.

they are two completely different things.. and because of it things like Jazz IMO cannot be taught by sheet music. you have to be able to listen and hear the music.

but knowing how to read and play by ear puts you ahead of the competition too. I just wish I knew how to read music for guitar too.

I really loved Chopin's work as a kid and use to listen to the classical music station in hopes someone would play it. But I do enjoy classical. The piano is so soothing.
