hey lil, you need to gety a damp wash cloth, and stick in the microwave for about 30seconds...put the hot rag in a plastic baggy and stick it up to your jaw, where it pops, this should help releive the pressure....

I have an unusually small mouth. I bought one of those and it made me gag at the smallest setting. When I go to the dentist they can barely fit the x-ray films in my mouth.

Ok, do what what Betty has said, mine got so bad that I was told I needed surgery, I decided warm was what I needed. I made mine really really warm, over and over as many times as you can in one sitting. It started to kinda hurt but I got it in my head it was healing. Ends up it went away and I was told later with a back issue I was healing it!

It's weird with me, I don't have so much popping when it's bad, it's just like all the tissue around that joint gets all sore and inflamed so that my jaw doesn't fit together right anymore. So if I try to chew it's like I'm pinching the inflamed tissue, and if I open my mouth too wide the joint get misaligned and it takes a good amount of work to realign it so I can close my mouth normally. What causes this? It just flared back up within the last couple days.

alright, I'll try some heat. Would alternating heat and cold work? I heard that's supposed to be good for inflammation?

Sound exactly what happened to me, I dont have the answer as to what causes your or my flare ups. Mine is always a little sore ( I rarely wear the mouth piece) And I did not have surgery!

TMJ" stands for TemporoMandibular Joint, or the jaw joint.
Laura,

You have two TMJs, one in front of each ear, connecting the lower jaw bone (the mandible) to the skull. The joints allow movement up and down, side to side, and forward and back?all the mobility necessary for biting, chewing and swallowing food, for speaking and for making facial expressions.

Some experience soreness, popping clicking clenching etc

Last time it took a couple months to go away, it was horrible. And I just woke up one morning feeling like I'd been punched in the jaw. I'd rather this not take that long to go away! lol I'll definitely give that heat thing a shot. How soon does it start feeling better with heat?
