Is slavery just something that happened to African Americans or is it a part of their culture?

I think it?s both. But I don?t understand why some African American still say whites oppress them because they were once owned by whites.
Yes, African Americans are in the minority. They will always be. What does that have to do with slavery?

Blacks owned black slaves.
They were free blacks in the South.

I watched this and loved it. Have you seen it?

I don't see anyone say "whites oppress us because we were once slaves."

Slavery is a horrible part of our history. The legacy of slavery still affects us today. Racism is still rampant, and oppression is still rampant.

I feel African Americans will always be in the minority. Remember from my other posts a minority isn?t a negative thing. Everybody has purpose and worth regardless of what social class you?re in. Minority and majority. The majority will have more simply because they?re the ones making the decisions. Big group has more than the smaller group.

Because African Americans are the minority will they always use the ?slave card? to explain why they feel oppressed?
I?m in a minority too but don?t have an easy excuse to explain my feelings. (I?m disabled)

Will slavery continue to be tangled up with what it means to be in the African American minority?

You seem to be arguing that blacks are not actually oppressed, and that blacks don't actually experience racism.

They don't talk about slavery simply because they're in the minority. They talk about slavery because they experience the racism and lingering fallout of being enslaved on a daily basis.

I doubt being a minority affects your production level. If you are referring to African Americans, then maybe decades of oppression might have had something to do with their ignorance, but even so, they should at least be able to see what they're weaknesses are and try to improve on them. Look at other minorities like Asians; they're mostly successful and ambitious. I have never seen an African American use the "slave card", maybe it's because of where I live or maybe it's because they don't. I don't think you've met a lot of African Americans because your view of them seems to be limited.

I do feel African Americans are oppressed.
Every minority group is oppressed.
Yes in a sense it is like slavery.

But when I hear the word ?slavery? my mind jumps to early American history and it makes no sense to equate that to what type of oppression African Americans face today. I fail to see the connection.

Maybe they need something to excuse their current situation. But I think they should probably look at the more successful African American and aspire to be like them...

hold on, if we all go back in history you will see that the first slaves were WHITE. slavery was began as a way for people to pay off their debts. not to mention that blacks sold each other into slavery. I don't feel its right but I have often heard black people say "we deserve (welfare, scholarhips, etc) because my ancestors were slaves." if they believe this, then everyone should be able to get these benefits, considering ALL of our ancestors were at one point slaves. I also feel that blacks are no longer the minority. look at schools these days, the white students are the minority. just some thoughts. take it or leave it, but don't argue with me cuz I won't put up with it. facts are facts.

what about white people who deal with it on a daily basis. people don't realize that BLACKS are racist too. they discriminate against whites constantly. and as far as their ignorance, its a lifestyle choice. they have more opportunities than most. The UNCF and the other organizations give ONLY to black students. the kids choose not to take advantage therefore its their fault that they live the way they do, just like its a white persons fault for choosing not to use the scholarships available to us. its not because of slavery.

Ok, you got me.
When I?ve seen an angry black person they won?t come out and actually say my ancestors were slaves. I feel the unspoken oppression thou. No doubt. I feel it in the air.

Ehem. You are thinking of indentured servants. Yes, they did experience hardships somewhat similar to slaves but they could eventually obtain freedom. Plus you might notice that indentured servitude declined in the late 1600's and early 1700's when enslaving blacks became more profitable.

Africans sold other Africans to slavery but it was the whites' decision to treat them the way they did. Plus the African view of slavery is quite different than the American one. In Africa, a slave could buy his freedom, integrate into the other tribe's society and even marry. In America, a slave was a slave until s/he died. And blacks are in no way a majority.

There might be some schools in black neighborhoods where whites are a minority but overall, America is still overwhelmingly white.

And next time, please cite where you found your "facts".

Yep, there is probably some unspoken tension. It's hard for me to know what they might be thinking, however, because I have no idea what African Americans go through.
