Albert Pierrepoint was the most prolific hangman in british history, he hung 608 people during his service as official executioner.
There was a film anout on ITV1 a few nights ago and if there was any accuarcy in the film the man had a massive sense of pride and decency in a truly awful job.

I wonder how he coped pulling the lever that many times?

He came to oppose the death penalty in later life but only after he'd executed 608 people

Not a job I could do!

I remember watching a programme a few years ago that said that a lot of executioners throughout history had commited suicide.

Apparently Pirrepoint died peacefully at a residential home in the 90's, so he couldn't have been that haunted by the hangings.

Infact he quit the job over a pay despute with the home office when a prisoner was pardoned a few hours before he was due to be hung, Pierrepoint was supposed to get ?15 but only got ?1.

I wonder what he was like, as a person. I wonder how he justified it to himself.

Personally I think he felt he was good at his job, he was really fast...fastest time was 7 seconds to get the bloke on the gallows, stick a hood on him, rope then lever so the person didn't have time to fall to peices.

It was and the film was kinda sad to, the hanging scenes were amazing and you really did feel a sense of he cared, he made sure all the bodies got coffins and decent burials as he felt they'd paid the ultimate price and deserved to buried properly.

Yes his name was James Corbett, he murdered his girlfiend in a fit of jealousy. Corbett used to drink in the pub Pierrepoint and his wife owned.
