The New Yorker is a very intellectual magazine with lots of very dense and often quite creative content.

It's decidedly highbrow (and very snooty), and its readership will by and large understand the intent of the cover without issue.

However, it's a stupid stupid move by the magazine, because they should know better. This cover would be seen by the public at large as something quite different from intended. Maybe they want the controversy, I guess. But they either simply didn't think or they want the thing to be grossly misinterpreted.

The article sums up the problem quite comprehensively.

I agree. Surely the editors are counting on this cover being misinterpreted by a large number of people. Intent is the key to discern in this case.

I said as much. They were either incredibly brain-dead (it is entirely possible that the editors of that magazine have their heads so far up their asses that they wouldn't dream of a cover being seen or misinterpreted by the unwashed masses) or their exact intent was to cause controversy.

The cover is a good reminder that the media is not about reporting the news so much as it is selling a story/magazine issues.
While its good that the United States maintains relative freedom of the press, we sometimes have to endure the bad with the good. it is surprising that the New Yorker would use such an inflammatory cover image.
The article does make an interesting comment that because it is so outrageous, it will be interpreted as satire. With no disrespect to individuals, my take is that the general public may not see it that way.

I'm inlcined to agree. That or they truly don't care what the unwashed masses think. You're either one of them and you get it or you're not and you don't. If you don't, they don't see that as their concern.

Um, yeah, that's the joke.

When you actually put together all of the crazy right-wing theories about Obama and depict them like this, it just seems incredibly absurd. So absurd that you have to laugh at the people that come up with this stuff.

The picture is, literally, making fun of the "Obama is a Muslim!" crowd.

When you get down to its intended meaning, the image is a pretty biting and direct insult to many conservatives.

Saying to someone "your ideas are so ridiculous, they're comically absurd" is an insult, don't you think?

That's precisely the message this cover is attempting to convey about many conservatives.

Yeah, I agree, there are just so many americans out there that don't know this stuff is NOT TRUE!!! And yes...it's very insulting....I may not have followed elections in the past, but it seems to me that no other candidate running for president has ever had to put up with the cramp Mr.Barack Obama is....very SAD!!!
