A Mississippi businessman accused in the contract killing of his daughter-in-law was found guilty on all charges, including murder and burglary, by a Fulton County jury Thursday afternoon. The trial now moves to the sentencing phase as prosecutors seek the death penalty for Chiman Rai, 68.

Did you read the story? He killed her because she was black and he and his son were Indian. That is a hate crime........And don't argue with me, go argue with CNN that just had the story on this just half an hour ago and they called it a "Hate Crime".

You've got to be either very bigoted, or just too lazy to read.

I've heard people in India have a very strong belief in their family name & reputation. I wonder if the father pressured the son to marry the Indian wife & give up the child to the maternal grandparents. Wonder how long they've lived in America?

Refering back to the initial question, yes he should be killed.

The court is dealing with a clash of cultures.... and going about it badly, IMO.

In my own mind, I would favor the death penalty for proven acts of murder. But,....according to the story, the associates who were responsible for hiring the hit-man have been relieved of doing actual jail time, and never faced the possibility of an execution.
Quote:
Two business associates who arranged for the murder received probation in exchange for their testimony during the trial. Willie Fred Evans and Herbert Green testified that they gave Cleveland Clark the $10,000 as payment for the killing.
So, if the prosecutor has already waived severe punishment for the accomplices, I don't see how a death sentence can now be justified for the instigator... Either way, the guy is a disgrace....

I suspect that the individual has been admitted to this country with a Visa, but is not yet a citizen, and for this reason, the case appears to be being handled with a degree of leniency. An oath of allegiance, i.e., being granted citizenship, would have meant that he had sworn to obide by, and uphold, the laws of this country; in which case I'd expect harsher treatment to be administered by the court system.

Can i ask why??

I think he should. He specifically planned, sought out and paid someone to do it. The child was 17 months old so he must have been planning it for some time.

What makes it so incredulous is that he did it believeing it woul bring shame on his family.
So Murder is nolonger shameful eh!!
Whatever!

Because the death penalty should not be an option in criminal cases.

Does anyone think his son or the parents of the murdered daughter-in-law should have some input, at least their opinions, on the man's fate? I think they should. To me, the murder offense was also committed against them - since they lost a loved one.
