We own slaves. Anybody can own slaves. Invest in Citicorp, American Express, or JP Morgan Chase. Many of their credit card holders have sold themselves into slavery. The major difference now is that slaves can declare bankruptcy.

although that is true and repulsive, i believe the article was discussing the more traditional term of slavery. the sex trade, child labor, sweatshops, etc.

From our point of view, Africa has many strange customs. For example, female circumcision seems odd to us, but slavery and circumcision are part of African culture. Maybe we should leave it to the Africans to judge.

Looking at it from that prospective, It was part of the American Culture also. That doesn't make it right!!

People become slaves because they need credit. For example, Benjamin Franklyn indentured himself to his brother. Today, instead of indentures we have credit cards, and the expression, slave has become a politically incorrect word. In European culture, slave had begun to become a politically incorrect word since at least the seventeenth century. For example, the King James Bible says servant when it means slave and bondage instead of slavery. As Shakespeare?s Juliet might say, changing the name doesn't change the thing.

European and African cultures have different ideas about economics and credit, but with the constant pressure from European media, the Africans will probably switch to credit cards without the help of William Lloyd Garrison and Custer's Seventh Cavalry.

Enslaving yourself to credit cards is a choice. You choose to live above your means. I have raised 9 children, well still working on half of them, not to mention a few extras along the way. I have yet to have HAVE to have a credit card. I don't buy into the BS that anyone has to have a credit card. I'm sure those girls being sold for prostitution would have loved to have a choice.

In European culture, choosing slavery has been voluntary for a long time. We read about a letter written by Michelangelo in which he considered selling himself. In other cultures, a tribe or a family might decide whose labor will be sold to pay the tribe's or the family's debt.

Our Grandma Dee wrote a novel about a Japanese family. We're not sure where she got the information. We suspect she had a Japanese boyfriend, like Rosalind Russell in A Majority of One. In the novel, a slave trader comes to the family's farm after a typhoon that has destroyed the farm except for a root crop like sweet potatoes. The father and the slave trader have a tea ceremony in which the slave trader offers to buy at least the youngest daughter. The father grabs the slave trader by his kimono and throws him through the front door. Then the father picks up the aluminum coins that fell from the traders pocket and throws the coins after the trader. Of course we cheered when we read it, but we realize that it wasn't true to the Japanese reality in which a real Japanese farmer would most probably have sold his daughter to save his farm.

Big difference between selling oneself or child into slavery out of desperation and choosing to live above your means, ending up enslaved to debt.

Is this a never-again-moment? Will you send in the marines to free the slaves?

Again the little girl didn't have a choice in the matter. The father had say if he wanted to sell his daughter into slavery. In modern time here and now a days do you know if people decide to just sell themselves. That would be a choice. selling a family memeber isn't ok.

In the United States, because bankruptcy laws allow forgiveness of debt, probably the only way to be sold into slavery with one stroke of the pen is to owe money to the Internal Revenue Service. The most common example might be widows whose husbands didn't pay their taxes. Credit cards are only the latest example of a way to become a slave. In Walden, Henry David Thoreau complains about how New England farmers owe their souls to the banks. And for a twentieth century example, try Sixteen Tons by Ernie Ford. He owes his soul to the company store.
