I thought about putting this in the movie section but according to this article, it's all about the science.

It's a list of five movie that we have not seen. Four of them we never heard of. One could wonder why, since we probably have seen every Star Trek episode.

But one might also wonder, science fiction is fiction. Somehow insisting on factualness seems odd.

They are just appreciating that the science and technology used in the story was mostly accurate and not some wild and crazy fabrication. When the science is true like that, it makes it more exciting because the fiction becomes more plausible.

Of course, you're right. Does Contact , the Jodie Foster movie based on Carl Sagan's novel use "mostly accurate" science? At the end if we recall correctly, it has an event that has no scientific explanation. We thought that was kinda cool, but we don't remember the details of the event.

yea I vaguely remember that movie too but the part where she goes into another dimension or whateer and what she sees while in there definitely can't be explained scientifically... yet. That's why I love sci fi, those kind of movies usually have a way of becoming reality, in time.

I took a class in college called "Science in Science Fiction"...it was all about how much actual science goes into sci fi books and movies. It was a great class...who wouldn't want to watch movies all the time and get college credit for it?

From the Alien bit:

Quote:
First, the adult somehow manages to grow from about 30 centimetres to 2 metres in a matter of hours.

This isn't all that unusual. Moth and butterfly wings are not in their final form when the insects emerge from the coccoon. Pythons can un hinge their jaws to swallow prey. Mice and rats and cockroaches can fit through very small holes. Not exactly the same as the Alien, but examples of animals that are ablt to compact themselves into small volumes.

Admittedly, the Alien's growthrate is a bit extreme, but not impossible. There are flies that have life spans of less than a day.
