(Sorry if this isn't quite the right forum section...)

I know that there is the Age Discrimination law but I get the feeling that if I were to look for a more satisfying position, Human Resources managers and hiring personnel will look at my age and think twice.

I used to think that anyone in their 40s was already set in their ways -- boy was I wrong! I feel like there are so many opportunities out there. Any thoughts?

I a lot of employers in the UK actually seek out older candidates because they usually had their families and they generally have common sense. A lot of job ads say "would suit retired person".

As to a change in career anyone of any age can take a university course and a lot of older people do a complete turnaround in their career path in middle age.

It's totally up to you.
Never mind what some donkeys in human resources say.
Having said that, many people when they reach say late 40's decide they want something more settled, and to just plod on till they can retire or work downsize to something less stressful - but that's not everyone.

Nope - it's totally up to you. TBH it will possibly keep us all more mentally alert in later life to keep up the challenges, so it must be good really.

One of the problems is they don't want a liability or extra cost if they're a business that gives health benefits. This is an exaggerated example but- some are worried that they'll higher an older person and they'll break a hip on the job or something and the business will be liable. My dad could wipe the floor resume wise with 80% if kid workers out there but they don't want to hire him because of age. It's hard to prove age discrimination.

It probably depends on the job. But most jobs aren't age specific.

My husband is 48, and is going to start going to school to become a dental hygienist. He was an aircraft mechanic before that.

I dont think there is an age limit on these things it entirely depends on the person and at the end of the day you have to do what makes you happy

Forty is too young to retire, yet too old for another job, I heard. Yet, it is never too late for self enrichment. Afterall, age, like countless of worldly things, is relative, indeed.

It is never too late to start a new career. It depends on what you want to do, what you need to know to do it and how much you want it!!!!

Where there's a will there's a way

Employers should not be age-ist (although i'm sure if you're 60 they might opt for the younger person and make up an excuse!!!! )
