I read a lot and no matter how I try to mix it up, reading anything and everything I always return to the nihilistic, angry, generation x authors writing stories about their social f*** ups?. These are the people I want to quote, the people whose views I seem to respect above all and whose lives I want to live?

?But I figure in real life it?s not me, I?m more inclined to strive to make someone happy, than selfishly take what I can get and f*** off, in real life I have always put everyone else?s fun above all, and tried to be the entertainer at all times.

So I wondered why, why am I hero-worshipping the bastards and socially defective?. Is it merely a craving for a cooler story to tell? Or has the anecdotal ?nice guys finish last? just pushed me over the edge?

why do people love Bender in Futurama? Hes a total jerk, same could be said for Ace Ventura I think they are the people we wish we could be but are far too worried about what people really think of us, or maybe because in real life people who act in such a way would be plain ostracised? I dunno

Obviously there's something enticing or intriguing. Maybe it's just a thought or an ideal. Either way, what we pick to focus on usually subconsciously helps to build our character in one way or another- good or bad is all a matter of opinion. All I would say, is tell the cool stories. Continue to strive for something or life loses meaning. Oh, and we need more nice guys...so don't knock that.

I suppose it stems back, i was always the quiet geek back in the day feeding every joke through a more brash and outspoken classmate and over the years i suppose i've learnt that a joke dying on its arse one time is shadowed ten fold by the occasion when you make everyone in the room piss themselves...

I'm not knocking nice guys at all like say i'm already bordering on obsessive of other peoples happiness

What makes you happy? Living off of others happiness is usually a sign that you are not happy. Is this true?

You can be a good guy and still live large. You can be a good guy and be charismatic as well. It's balance. If you find yourself idolizing what you call the asses, then seems to me it's time to stop thinking so much about what every one else thinks and just allow yourself to be you. That's not a d***ish thing to do...it's liberating.

I get what your saying with the Bender thing, nobody's favourite character is the nice guy say Flanders.....

i know life is never gonna be a palahniuk one liner i don't think anybody says these things in real life or is ever proud of there life span low points and yeah i figure anybody who played that card all the time would be ostracised.

I'm probably not the sunniest person in the world and I will put everyone before my own happiness I even buy presents and push added happiness for friends before i would ever sit back and think about what i wanted...

See I think I've got samples of both, partly in a cowardly way.
Say if I'm out with friends I won't be a basterd at all really, I'll just be a bit playfully mean sometimes, but otherwise try to make people I know happy however I can, sometimes that can really annoy me in the way that I feel a bit like a pushover.

But then there's me on the internet, which this is as I previously said cowardly but I can be a basterd online, for the obvious reason that on the internet people don't know who or where you are.

My nice side and nasty side conflicts are a problem of mine right now.

Halloween - do you find that you can only be happy when you have given?

Slight digression but i read Anthony Keidis's autobiography and he spoke about how he met this woman who basically as soon as someone said they liked something of hers she would say "take it" and he adopted this philosophy in his own life and it made him happier.

It is good to be humble, things are only things and of no consequence. It is good to make a person feel good even if this as at a cost of your own, perhaps going a little too much out of the way at times.

Yet you are as valid a person as any other on this earth so remember to treat yourself as you do your freinds and complete strangers. Give yourself the time you would give them and give yourself the occasional gift. You are as important as the people around you, and i think you need to realise this.

Not just then but a lot of the time yes my happiness is dependant on the happiness of friends and making other people in general laugh/smile/smirk/contemplate happiness at all...

( i am sorry this seems to have turned into my open psych session )

Its cool as long as you are comfortable to discuss this here.

I was very much like that up until recently. I dont know if it is age or what but i have changed a little. I do still try and cheer people up, give them a suprise when they really need it etc etc. But i also have learned that its perfectly ok for me to remain on an even keel even when those around me are unhappy and there is nothing i can do to fix it for them. Whereas before when those close to me were sad i would truly feel it too.

is there ever such a thing as an unselfish act? - i saw that on the TV. In my opinion it is not wrong to feel good about giving, save those thoughts for the nuns and whatnot whose job it is to feel bad about feeling good.
