Something that has troubled me recently regards evolutionay theory and in particular, "big bang theology". If we maintain that the universe was created out of nothing and we all are indeed just a consistency of star dust and gasses, where in the equation does human conciousness begin? How does inanimate matter develop into something living, breathing, and thinking?

Maybe that's were God comes into the equation?

really short answer, we are carbon based beings who have the right amount of physical chemistry to think for ourselves and learn. How - i dont know. Why - i dont know that either. When - i havent got a clue

Well presumably consciousness is nothing more than brain activity.

To believe otherwise is to already assume some sort of split between physical/nonphysical. In other words, you are assuming there are things that operate outside the laws of physical nature. There is proof that the physical can influence consciousness, however, so there must be some causal connections there. The simplest explanation is that consciousness is brain activiity, unless you're suggesting some new natural laws that nobody knows about.

Whilst consciousness may be put down to brain activity (which i personally feel is far too simplified an explanation), I still cant help but feel the vast jump required to change from inanimate to animate is bewildering. To begin with, how can something be created out of nothing, and how can the inanimate develop into intelligent living life without some kind of external force working upon it?

Maybe this is where God comes in (as previously suggested by Charles).

Science explains it quite well. If you're not happy with that, I guess God or whatever you want to call it is the only option.

The big bang thoery is still a thoery but does hold alot of water in wat it is.

As for planetery evolution, and how we became. we can only answer as a direct result of millions of years of cooling on certain planets in the sweet spots of orbits around stars. the thoery then spans into the pimeordial soup thoery, The Primordial Soup Theory suggest that life began in a pond or ocean as a result of the combination of chemicals from the atmosphere and some form of energy to make amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, which would then evolve into all the species.

No the time frame of which we work on this is billions of years of mutation from ratiadiation atmospheric changes. the plants and animals that evolved had to have a area of there body to control there basic insticts like breathe etc.. i bet somewhere along the evolution they had to conciously think to breathe.. once that was a automated thing, eating.. and general survival. which the more they need to survive i guess the more the vbrain of said animals would evolve to learn. which then gain conciousness to learn.. but maybe they learn inherantly or they actually pick things up. then there bodies suit there enviroment over millions of year sof selection and enviromental selection, it is not the strongest that survive but the ones willing to change, which creates intelligents or awareness. millions of year of change and awareness then you get more and more complicated brain matter and then more and more thought of the said animals surroundings. making it think or react due to skills learned. millions of years of that.. then you have us....

anyway that my thoughts on it.

I believe in intelligent design, I just don't think God is a Christian.

"the combination of chemicals from the atmosphere and some form of energy to make amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, which would then evolve into all the species"

Just like that? I cant help thinking that science has to justify its belief without any proof, thus becoming totally unscientific. The problem then arrives of evolution by mutation, where mutation actually improves a species rather than deteriorates it. This is found nowhere in nature.

I think the science bit no offence would be over your head.. you would have to look at it from a subatomic level of how things joined in certain enviroments.. which happens over millions of years. The actually science you will need to understand bio chemistry..

Why dont you think mutation is not found in nature? is it not a certain enviroment that cause a change in the geno... a mutation, so that said organism can survive within its changing enviroment.

Lets say we have a bundle of cells, it is the extent of life on the planet.
It was created an evolutionary defence mechanisim where by instead of normal mitosis where the cell splits in two and they go there seperate ways, this cell splits in two and the new cell stays attached to the parent because whateve enviroment it is in and whatever threats it faces, this is the best way to survive.
These cells work together the survive and after a few million years with enviromental changes included, the cells have evolved to be a bigger bundle, eventualy over millions of years this bundle has to change to survive and cells on the outside of the bundle have to move the bundle around on its search for energy and cells on the inside are needed for other jobs.
Eventualy you will have the very basic sea creatures, plankton->shrimps->small crustaceans
and then things start to get interesting, cells are developed for hunting/defence, brains are developed, starting as a few cells to keep other cells working and this develops into the brain keeping the organs working.
After that point, the big development that I dont get is self awareness, I can understand why a dog looks in the mirror and sees another dog and not itself, and i understand how we can look in the mirror and not see a different person, but i dont understand how we went from one to the other.

He's not, but we Christians follow him just the same as the other Abrahamic religions do.

Try reading 'the blind watchmaker' prof richard dawkins. You may find alot of the answers your looking for in there.
