"Designed to Limit Population Growth
China has proclaimed that it will continue its one child policy, which limits couples to having one child, through the 2006-2010 five year planning period.

China's one child policy was established by Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in 1979 to limit communist China's population growth. Although designated a "temporary measure," it continues a quarter-century after its establishment. The policy limits couples to one child. Fines, pressures to abort a pregnancy, and even forced sterilization accompanied second or subsequent pregnancies."

anyone have opinions about this??? I have heard about the policy and was pretty shocked at first knowing that someone can restrict you from having a family but I guess I could see why with the overpopulation, what do you think??? Do you think your country should start this policy with maybe instead of 1 child it may be 3? Is there a global crisis of overpopulation?

I have heard about this years and years ago, and I guess it is what is necessary given the fact that they are so 'over run' with people. That is the 'reason' to my understanding why they are doing it...

I can see fining the people if they deviate from this law - but forcing abortion, and forcing sterilization? C'mon, that is just plain wrong!

on an economic level there's no over population crises worldwide.
there's plenty of food and space for alot more of us.

but i'm bloody sick of people so i think the fewer the better.

also i'd rather we didn't have such a big impact on our enviroment,
deforestation, animal extinction and whatnot.
and screw our economy.

i don't know the exact laws of China off hand but they do seem ridiculously unfair and unjust and infringing on many basic human rights we take for granted in our own countries.

China forcing abortion is obviously a huge violation of human rights but is it
not on par with countries that won't allow a girl the right to chose whether or
not she wants to terminate her pregnancy? Surely in the long run forcing
unwilling women into motherhood is even more damaging than limiting their
family sizes?

What if someone has twins? Do they make them give up one for adoption or something?

Yeah, well I see the motivation in his plan, but it is taking the rights away from the family.

at the core, its population control, but that should be no suprise to anybody. to put some light on this rarely used government function let me give some examples of other historic population control events in history: the holocaust, the slower decimation of the native american population to give room enough for expanding a young US, depopulization of Africa, just to name a few. Point being, population control is just plain evil, any way you look at it. Yes, this may be the most humane method of elimination to date, but the act in of itself to look at and make human population as something animal to be controlled is anything but humane.

i don't think you can compare the holocaust to limiting a person to an amount of children.
unless they killed them.
the forced steralisation is something i wasn't aware of though.
but right now i'm unsure of the circumstances under which it is applied.
though no circumstance is acceptable, i;m sure its too rare to
compare to WW2
