Google "antivirus" and "firewall", these are two things you MUST have installed on your machine if you are to use the internet.

Then download "spybot" and "hijack this" (again, google for more info and downloads). Both programs will tell you if any malicious software is installed on your machine. Spybot is easiest to use with a nice interface, and it will hold your hand and help you out. Hijack this is a much more comprehensive program that picks up more threats, but it's not very user friendly and the results look like gibberish to non-techies. There are a few web forums around that you can post the hijack this log to, and the users will tell you what to delete and what to keep.

I'm sure more up to date techies than I will be on the thread soon to give more information, but this is a good starting point.
