It's a custom license plate of course you gotta pay. Usually special ones I see are from organizations for nature reserves you can donate for. Stuff like "in god we trust" is a special saying you personally would want meaning you will have to pay for the custom plates. Don't really see the anger or dilema here since it has always cost money to get anything besides a normal license plate. Now the trend I do see showing up is you want a goverment ran thing to agree with this saying and say we will give christians these plates for free because the country agrees with them. What about other religons? (Yes I know it is in the pledge and all that junk but it is still a religous saying.)

"the state Bureau of Motor Vehicles gives preferential treatment to motorists wanting the plates, which also feature the American flag, because they don?t have to pay the $15 administrative fee that the agency collects on sales of most other Indiana specialty plates."

So, let's see.

1) The State of Indiana has introduced a license plate for Christians, but not for any other religion.

2) The State of Indiana encourages its citizens to get the Christian plate over any other custom license plate.

This is a textbook violation of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

I'm proud of the ACLU. I'm glad someone is out there fighting for my civil liberties.

I don't want the government shoving a religion that I believe is stupid, dangerous bulls*** down my throat. Thankfully, we have laws that prevent them from doing it and the ACLU to go after them when they try it.

"The ACLU is working to persuade federal and state lawmakers to support legislation outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity."

"Following separate lawsuits, the Department of Veterans Affairs agreed to allow family members to include a religious symbols on headstones."

"New Campaign Promotes Youth Access to Lawyers in Ohio"

"Montana Enacts First Statutory Rejection of Real ID Act"

"ACLU Urges Fair Jury Selection for Death Penalty Cases"

"ACLU applauds introduction of ENDA bill banning bias at work"

"The ACLU has long argued that veterans and their families should be free to choose religious symbols on military headstones ? whether Crosses, Stars of David, Pentacles, or other symbols ? and that the government should not be permitted to restrict such religious expression in federal cemeteries."

"The Constitution's framers understood very well that religious liberty can flourish only if the government leaves religion alone. The free exercise clause of the First Amendment guarantees the right to practice one's religion free of government interference. The ACLU will continue working to ensure that religious liberty is protected by keeping the government out of the religion business."

Yeah man. Those f***ers. That web site pisses me right off.

How does it violate the first amendment?

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion"

The Bill of Rights applies to all governments in the US, including state governments.

It is a violation of this amendment for the government of the State of Indiana to promote the distribution of Christian-themed license plates as it unfairly respects certain religions and disregards others. It is the same reason teachers are not allowed to lead schoolchildren in Christian prayers and courts cannot force a witness to take an oath to God.

That is an illogical argument. That argument would equally apply to everything and make social change impossible.

Here's a rephrasing of that argument, but set in a different time period to illustrate the error of the thinking more clearly:

"America has always had slaves!! If you don't like it, move to Canada!"

Good point..

Church and state should remain separate. You may think it's all great to try and force god and state in the same box now, but when it all falls through and you start being told when and where you can worship, and how you can worship, you will wish that the church and state had remained a separate entity.
