What do you think of fraternities and sororities? Have you ever been in one? What was your experience like?

The stereotype is that it's just a guaranteed place to go every weekend and party and get drunk. That frat boys and sorority girls are just obnoxious and annoying people.

Then there's the other side that says it's all about forming strong bonds and finding acceptance, etc etc. That many fraternities do in fact take part in community service projects and other good things like that. And the whole exclusiveness factor is nice

Personally, I can't see myself in a sorority. I just don't really think it would be my thing. How close can you really get with 60 or 70 other people? How is this any different from meeting 60 or 70 people in your classes and hanging out with them? I doubt everyone in the fraternity/sorority really likes everyone else.

I guess it could be great for some and not so great for others. I think as long as you do your research on the fraternity you're planning on joining you'll be okay.

But it just seems to me that the pledging and everything would be too stressful/demanding. Is it really worth it?

we don't have anything like that over here.
if its ANYTHING like the movies.
then people need more self confidence and to stay away from self-righteous idiots.
thats a bit naive though.i'm sure it's not actually like that.

i've never been one for cliques, especially not such organised ones.

Well my best friend is in one and it's not like the movies at all, if anything it just gives her something to do every weekend, which does not always involve drinking.

i kind of wish we had them here in a way because maybe i would not be spending my saturday nights bored out of my mind lol

I don't think I'd have the patience for a sorority

Some of the hazings are ridiculous (not to mention dangerous).

It just seems to me that, if these people were really that interested in being your friends, you wouldn't be asked to do such stupid stuff

That's another thing. If you make the wrong decision and decide you want to depledge, who knows what a few might do

I am a new member of Phi Kappa Theta, and most of what is said in this forum is very stereo-typical. It is an experience that i would not trade for the world. And yes, I am close with my brothers (associate members, aka pledge brothers) and soon to be fraternity brothers. There is more to a fraternity or sorority than just partying, we also put graduating from college at the top of the list, and we also partake in community service/philantropy. And for that person with a cousin that depledged and had his car vandalized, that is a rare but sad occurence and only reflects the quality of their brotherhood and fraternity.

I joined a sorority my freshman year in college. It was the single most educational experience I had in college (other than classes of course!). At the time there were roughly 40 girls in the house. On my very first day, I met a girl who seemed pretty cool. That first year, we hung out at Sorority events but never really saw each other outside of that. When it came time to choose roommates for our Sophomore year, it was a no brainer that we should live together. After a week in the same room, it seemed we were attached at the hip! I have never had a friend as understanding, fun, and close as she and I are. She is truly the sister I never had.

The other side of sorority life is the drama...and yes there is going to be drama when you put 40 girls in a house together. While many girls backstab, gossip about, or straight up hate each other, they always have the bond of sisterhood and in the end, it's all about learning how to deal with different kinds of people and situations.

Joining a sorority was probably one of the greatest and worst things I've ever done, and I would do it all over again...I definitley suggest going through recruitment even if you don't end up joining a house...you meet a lot of people and learn a lot about campus...

I joined a sorority last year. I'm still in it now, but am probably deactivating soon. It's not what I thought it would be, or what it SHOULD be. I'm sure there must be some good ones out there, but mine is very large (over 100 girls). One thing I don't like about it is that since it's so large, there are lots of girls you barely know at all, which is awkward walking around campus and exchanging awkward hi's. Also, most of my close friends on campus are not in the sorority, even though I have been in it for about a year now. Mainly, it seems that sororites are for women who want to party and hook up with guys in frats, or women who can't find their niche elsewhere on campus. You can find everything that a sorority has to offer elsewhere, without paying for it. (minus the privledge to wear greek letters on your clothes at campus, which I don't want to do anyway. I don't want people to look at me and judge me based on that, I want to be an individual). I hate how sorority girls use the term "s*** show" about getting wasted and blacking out, and how they post lots of drunk pictures on facebook that look trashy. Also, my sorority is now getting clique-y as a result of becoming so large. If you join one, make sure you are absolutely confident you love the girls there. Don't accept a bid from a sorority with girls you don't know at all. Also, my sorority subjects women to fining if they don't attend recruitment events, which I find to be absolutely absurd. Try to find clubs and other groups on campus that you love and can do without dishing out thousands of dollars over the years. Then you can be friends with who you want to be friends with, without feeling obligated to be someone's friend just because you're in the same group. Also, a lot of sororites sing "dirty" songs that are really actually demeaning to women, I feel, which I do not support and don't want to participate in. Being greek isn't as cool as it seems, trust me. Frats I have a little more respect for, because they actually know most of the people in them well and behave more like brothers to one another. Be careful.

Actually I would definitely recommend one to enter or be part of some sorority or fraternity while in college. But there are many many different types of the out there. There are some "professional" sororities/fraternities that are within a person's major...these that are professional are a must. Not only do you network, do community service etc but its the easiest and best way to get your foot in the door when applying for internships and jobs.

The ones you see in the movies are usually campus wide sororities/fraternities. Yeah its more of a social thing at that point, but there are really cool, they work with your schedule and other most of them require a certain number of hours of participation and you can pick what you want etc...no need to go a party if you don't want to. Many a community and socially based if they are campus wide...its just fun if you don't know anyone and are trying to make friends.

But I definitely recommend being part of some professional society.
