Not in the face!

Ok sin, you be the boss here, what part is most prominent on your mind?

Yeah, so I'm too liberal. This is probably why I don't talk to most people. Especially in the Bible belt. I was kind of annoyed at the post just directed at me on another topic, but oh well. I get hostile easily.

In all honesty sin, I get annoyed at some of the Bible belt stuff too, because I think a lot of the Bible belt is missing the Bible and is more like just a big whipping belt. Don't worry, I'm as harmless as a kitten.

I'm seriously thinking about taking some theology classes at school. I'm really interested in religions. Not just Christianity. I like to learn about people and what makes them who they are. (Psychology major, soon to be double in Sociology)

Me too, though it's too late for me to take the classes, in college anyway. I think you learn more about your own belief by learning the beliefs of others -- one reason I like healthy debates.

Ok, so which of those 14 mega-issues you wanna start with?

FIRST, I want to talk about the Bible. How can it be considered such a credible source when it's contradictory, has known forgeries in it, and has been translated several times?

Geez, you two crack me up. You guys are great, ya'll make this thing VERY interesting...I like interesting stuffff. I can't wait till more people jump in on this, just so I can see their replies.

Sadly, I don't much to say on the topic...I just recently began believing in god again...I think...But I don't believe in the bible. And I don't pray. And I don't go to church...and I don't like/believe religion...I think if heaven and hell are real, then I'm screwed...My brain hurts (or lack thereof)

Hey Ashley, about not being big on religion, I can relate. I HATE being called religious! I'm a person in search of reality, and my life's experience has shown me that this is reality. The cool thing about real Christianity (as opposed to just "church people") is that, in my opinion, religion only enhances Christianity, but Christianity is not solely a religion. It is a pursuit of the truth.

Okay, sin, great point to start on. Can you name some specific contradictions, as examples? You'll find that actually, there are very few contradictions among various translations, in fact most of them are cases in which an "a" should've been a "the" or something like that. Nonetheless, there's a way around them. The amazing thing about the Bible that also aides in its credibility is that it has maintained its consistency over the centuries. Even while various translations (more as time goes by) stray in different directions, we still have access to the original Greek and Hebrew texts, and THAT hasn't changed. So when in doubt, see what you can learn about that.

Now, don't get me wrong here -- you don't have to go out and learn two entirely new languages just to read the Bible clearly. What I mean is that when you encounter a contradiction, find out what the original text means and learn that part of the language.

For example, take the word "love". That's lost some meaning in translation. Where as we have the same word "love" for "I truly love you" and "I love candy", the original language of the Bible does not. You have, for example, "agape", which is unconditional love, and various others. So that's how you get around the lost-in-translation problem.

See, and now you can go around telling people "I agape you!"

Ohh, what do you think about this:

If we insist on placing ourselves under the old law, as Paul reminds us, we are obligated to keep every commandment of the law (Gal. 5:3). But if Christ is the end of the law (Rom. 10:4), if we have been discharged from the law to serve, not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit (Rom. 7:6), then all of these biblical sexual mores come under the authority of the Spirit. We cannot then take even what Paul himself says as a new Law. Christians reserve the right to pick and choose which sexual mores they will observe, though they seldom admit to doing just that. And this is as true of evangelicals and fundamentalists as it is of liberals and mainliners.

I was raised Catholic (until about age 8, then my family converted to methodist, and then all my family turned evil and my mother started beating me and my brother and verbally abusing us...and that was the nice things she did for us. Then I went thru a 6 year period of total hell between family, friends, moving around and my own stupid choices/mistakes. So, in that time I kinda stopped believing. Now, I'm starting to kind of believe again...maybe one day.

"I agape you"...yeah, I think people would look at me like I'm crazy and call the police on me cuz they would think I'm talking about some kind of criminal intent. I crack myself up.

My mother is Catholic and my father is Southern Baptist. Amazingly, they got married that way. If my dad would have raised us, I would have been all messed up (not to say that Southern Baptists raise messed up kids, but I like the way I am now). Luckily, my mother was the primary parent. She taught me to think for myself, and to keep an open mind to others' opinions. I don't know what happened to my brother. He's too passive-aggressive.

Paul was writing to Isreal because Isreal rejected Christ as the Saviour. Paul tells Isreal that Christ is the end of the law for righteousness, meaning God's righteousness is Jesus' righteousness. Jesus was the fulfillment of the law.

Jesus says in Matthew 4:23 "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill."

Christians do not reserve the right to pick and choose.
