Why are people labled not by what they believe, but what they were born as?

For example I'm an agnostic/athiest, I dont believe in God though im not 100% convinced he doesnt exist. Yet due to the fact that my parents were both from Catholic families (despite the fact that they too are Athiests) I am seen as a Catholic.

I got to wondering why is this so? Just becouse my Grandparents were Catholics, how come i'm a Catholic? Why do people insist on calling me a "tim" or whatever, due to the believes my parents parents had? Despite the fact that im not a believer, and if i was a religious person, Catholisism would be near the bottom of the list of religions i'd choose to follow (right above Protestantism).

So again, why are we known by the religions we are born into?

I guess your parents have been around a while and it is only natural that people presume that children are what their parents are, after all we don`t wear a sign saying I don`t believe what my parents believe.I don`t follow my parents religion either.

because people associate like with like and also because we tend to believe that people are brought up the same as the rest of there family. therefore your grandparents were catholic, they brought up your parents as catholics and so you must be catholic by the same arguement - it is a way of categorizing people.

It seems really stupid. I mean my grandparents aren't even devout Catholics. My parents haven't attended mass since they was about 5 and i was Christened in a Protestant Church (Church of Scotland if anyones interested), yet im still, in the eyes of many people, a Catholic.

The sectarianism in Scotland over protestant and catholics isn't even particularly prevelant over here, yet with some people, it really does matter. There are some Protestants who refuse to talk properly with Catholic people. It just seems so stupid.

it is stupid but people categorize others. people think i must hate all other christians and non-believers and that im like american evangelists because im non-conformist but its not true.

I'm not sure.

Up until a while ago I would say I was a Catholic even though I never really had a true belief in God or practiced any of the Catholic customs/traditions all that much. Most people weren't familiar with my beliefs, (I wasn't entirely sure of them either) and assumed because I had attended religious instruction and was confirmed, I was a Catholic. I didn't really pay that much attention to it, tbh.

I think still most would call me Catholic, even though I'm not really, simply because no one really asks about my beliefs. I guess most would just go by what they do know--that I went to Church at one point in my life.

But in your case, I dunno if it's the same.

some people know you for who you are...those are your friends and sometimes your enemies.

other people "know" you for what they choose to see...for what they choose to see in you.

normally they do not matter very much.

if they are not your friends and/or family it does not matter what they think...unless you choose to give it value...unless you choose to give them some level of power over you...

Its all about the past.

It was common practice (as in...the only practice I should say) that whatever your parents were (job, religion, etc...) then you are the same...

Obviously...(at least to the elders) if your parents are one...then you MUST be one too...

Also, many times people don't like to think to much...a child, a minor or w/e is not a person...just seen as another part of the family...if the parents are one...it is assumed that the children are too...

...I denounced my religion and all religions in a harsh enough manner (and continue to when the subject is brought up) that it is impossible for people to lable me as anthing other than Athiest.

My dad is roman catholic going back at least 15 generations, and my mothers side is baptist going back even further. I am an atheist and have never been considered otherwise

this annoys me too,
i really don't think your belief structure should be catogorised by the fact that your family is catholic.

i'm not a chatolic, i'm not really an atheist either, nor do i consider myself a pagan,
i've got my own little religion going on which i don't consider a religion.

but i'm in no way catholic.

yeah my mum and dad were both very heavily involved in many protestant churches, around victoria.

they knew everyone. now when i see their friends or people that they know, they all talkto me about christian stuff and about how great it is that god is with us and my goodness he works in themost fabulous ways.

and i sit there, little old agnostic that i am, saying "i don't care at all about that"

and then they have the nerve to tell me what i believe is wrong and that i should be a christian, and the only answer as to why i should be is that i am dissappointing my mother, and my deceased father, and god himself...

so i respond, what has god ever done to me?? and they get really angry.

so the point of that story was yes indeedy it is frustratin when you are placed in a box with your parents when no one has taken the time to even ask what yuo are... if you are anything at all..
