@sakina Said
first - don't install sp2 (sp2 security features can be compensated by using 3rd party freeware)

second - install a firewall e.g sygate personal firewall
third - prevent generic host process and svchost.exe from accessing the internet - use your firewall settings
fourth - install some free antispyware - www.spybot.com
fifth - install a free antivirus - www.avast.com
sixth - install a 3rd party browser and mail client - e.g Opera(free no ads - with e-mail client incl. www.opera.com) or www.mozilla.org firefox and thunderbird

I haven't tried Opera or Firefox, so I can't comment on those. But I wholeheartedly agree that preventing generic host and svchost.exe from accessing the internet thru your firewall settings is highly recommended. I also see your point about not installing sp2 and agree that its security features can easily be compensated by third party software. However, most commercial Firewall/Antivirus software insist that you keep your system fully up to date with all the latest Microsoft service packs and security downloads. So I installed sp2 to comply, but just disabled its security features in favour of my third party software...Yes, I know that seems pointless, but I did so because I got fed up with my 3rd party software prompting me to install all the latest service packs etc all the time! Now I get peace and quiet! Lovely! LOL

Norton is absolute garbage. It sticks to your system like bloody glue when you try to uninstall it.

Oh no ! the faults not really microsofts ! windows just gets HAMMERED AT more bcoz 90% + ppl worldwide choose to use it ! hackers love puplicity and rather tha hitting the 2-3 % who use other os's they love to hit windows bcoz of the noise hitting 90%+ creates.

intslling all the latest update, having a good av and one good anti-spy like say adaware keeps windows running smooth enuff.

to stay secure replace ur hosts file and use ie-spydas. dont think ur pc will get infected ... nice article about this at www.winvistaclub.com/security.html
