When you click on the button to view the posts since your last visit, it has to search through ever post in the topic to find the ones that were made later than the last time you visited.
With shorter topics it's faster because it only has to search a few posts. With longer ones, it takes longer, and takes more RAM and CPU.
So that's the reason topics end after getting a ton of posts.
