I've known this girl for two years and her behaviour has me stumped. She's the sort of person who hasn't grown up, she still believe's in fairies and vampires, spends days in her room reading romance novels and live's her life believing a white knight will come and get her, despite other's and myself telling her to grow up and be more realistic. She's also very attention seeking, manlipulative, a cronic lier, and materialistic.

About 6mths ago, she came to me and told me that she had Bipolar, at first I believed her, but recently it's become difficult for me trust a word that come's out of her mouth due to some circumstances that arose that have made me question many things about her. It's gotten to the point where not even her own family believe she's sick, we all think she's just saying it to get sympathy and attention.

Do you think it's possible to fake a mental illness?

good question, yes i do think people fake mental illness all the damn time to get certificates for work - in fact i know it as i have heard people brag about this. They give people with genuine mental illness a very bad name and attach more stigma.

The girl you are talking about obviously isnt stable mentally if she makes up all the crap she does and she gets away with it. So in a way, she may seem to be faking it but must be some sort of compulsive lair and therefore is mentally ill.

It is as easy to fake a mental illness as it is to fake a physical one.

All one has to do is research the chosen area, learn that the side effects, causes and mannorisms of the chosen illness are and act them out.

This town is full of lazy bastards who falsly claim a wide range of illnesses, including mental illness to get access to Disability Living Allownance (DLA)and other social security benefits. So much so that the DLA sometime gets called the Derry Living Allowance.

This girl is very smart and if she applied her self to something she'd be quite a success, but she's full of procrasination, plus she works so I don't think it's because she's trying to fool welfare.

If anything she's saying it because she wants people to feel sorry for her.

Lets just assume that she has Bipolar, why would she want the whole world to know?

Being a attention seeker, malipulative, cronic lier and materialistic doesn't make one mentally ill.
Some people are rude.mean. and only want to criticize others. what about them

I think sometimes when a person doesn't seem to fit in there looked at as strange and something is wrong with them,
To many people including doctors put a label on them.
If you dont like what some one is. Choose another to hang out with.

there is part of you that wants the whole world to know not so they feel sorry for you but they will understand. bipolar isnt an excuse for behaving badly but it can explain why people behave the way they do

Well this is the thing, i guess we all see someone at some point throwing thier life away for stupid reasons.

I know what you mean, shes not stupid yet sets herself up for ridicule She could have a good life, a good career etc etc, yet seems to choose to live in this fantasy world where everyone feels sorry for her.

Sounds like a nut to me

if she is fakeing to get attention then ignor it. that is what you do to children (bare with me before you are insulted) when i child misbehaves the mother ignors te bad and praises the good. so when she is acting up ignor it and when she is being genuin and acting "normal" talk and interact as you would all your other friends.

There are many genuine cases out there but there are many that can fake all sorts of illnesses.

Personality disorders don't equate to illnesses in my book.

Sometimes people obtain things called Pysychological mental illnesses where they can obtain the things charecterised with the mental illness though they really dont have it, i dont think you can really fake it like faking being sick but there are many times you can believe it really is happening to you, maybe it alows you to explain away past actions scientifically as you see it. So i guess you could only to justify but you cant fake it like yuo can fake being sick, thats my 2cent.
