WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Nancy Johnson today voted to increase the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour. Rep. Johnson helped lead the effort to bring the bill to a vote on the U.S. House floor this morning.

By a bipartisan 230 to 180 vote, the House passed legislation upping the federal minimum wage, extending critical job creating tax incentives, and exempting more families and small businesses from death taxes.

Rep. Johnson wrote to House Majority Leader John Boehner earlier this week calling for a vote on legislation to increase the federal minimum wage. In the July 24 letter, Johnson and 47 other House Republicans wrote, "We believe it is time for Congress to take responsible action to raise the minimum wage and ensure our hard working constituents can provide for their families."

"Working families across America deserved this 40 percent pay raise," Rep. Johnson said. "Increasing the federal minimum wage will boost wages across the country and help keep Connecticut workers competitive. This is an important step towards ensuring financial for low-income families."

"The bill also extends critical tax incentives that I led the fight for to help manufacturers and create jobs. And it eliminates death taxes for more families, particularly small family-owned companies that otherwise face the fear of losing or breaking up their business because of high taxes," Rep. Johnson said.

Key provisions of the bill are summarized below:

* Minimum Wage Increased to $7.25: For the first time in 10 years, the bill increases the minimum wage rate of $5.15 per hour by $2.10 over three years in the following increments: $5.85 an hour effective on January 1, 2007; $6.55 an hour effective on June 1, 2008; and $7.25 an hour effective on June 1, 2009

* Research and Development Tax Credit Extended Through 2007: This important credit enjoys broad bipartisan support because it helps manufacturers invest in the cutting edge research necessary for new product development. This has a direct impact on manufacturing jobs, as more than 75 percent of the credit's value goes directly to paying wages, and it is key to keeping American manufacturers competitive.

* Work Opportunity Tax Credit Extended Through 2007: This credit helps give job opportunities to Americans coming off of welfare and seeking a better life. Employers who hire these individuals receive a $2,400 tax credit in the first year of employment. Over the past year, the Work Opportunity Tax Credit has helped approximately 6,000 former welfare recipients gain new jobs.

* Permanent Death Tax Relief for More Families and Small Businesses: The bill exempts estates under $5 million from taxation after a person's death, a move that will protect the vast majority of small business owners. When estates -- which can include property, savings and businesses - are passed on to relatives, the assets are taxed at a rate as high as 46 percent. This forces many families to break up or sell off small businesses in order to afford these high taxes. This is unfair to entrepreneurs who have worked all their lives to build a small business, only to have it vanish because of taxes on income and assets that have already been taxed over the years.

Why stop at $7.25? Why not show you are really for the "working man" and raise minimum wage to $15 an hour?

Although I disagree with most republican stances, they think that increasing minimum wage would hurt businesses and force lower income ones out of business or some crap like that.

It would not hurt anyone to raise it to 7.25/hour. Congress rasing their salary and voting down the minimum wage raise is pretty much congress taking a big crap on the common person.

Though 7.25 is a great idea, raising the wage to $15 would cause so much inflation that the economy would simply die, I think.

Because the number of jobs would decrease and the low income workers would be truly screwed. The unemployment rate will also increase.

Aditionally, retailers, fast food joints, etc... really aren't going to suck up all the extra cost, they are going to pass it on to the consumer. And since the companies most affected are the discounters, that pay minimum wage, the cost is then passed on theit consumers, i.e. the low income households that cannot afford to shop elsewhere. Ergo although the wage of those households may increase, so does the cost of maintaining a poverty level existence.

Support low income workers? Yes. Is minimum wage the right route? Maybe not.

i think that raising it is really gonna help people now i mean most people in this world barly get by ya know so i think this would really help the economy but it can also be a bad thing because more people are gonna want jobs and buinesses will have to shed out more money to their workers but i think itll help the workers mostly cause i think prices expecially in america are ridiculous and the taxes are raising and everything else is raising aswell such as the price of gas so i think this is a great chance for some of us people to finally get by.

I agree $15/hr would really be a bad idea, as far a economical standards would go. $7.25/hr is hard to get by on, it really is. I had to take a pay cut so that I could afford to live in the poverty level, and that was at full $8/hr, but really, I think that $7.25 is a good amount.

What people don't really think about is minimum wage is just that. It's minimum. There was a day when minimum wage was for teenagers, and teens were just a little more responsible. I know that I personaly had much less of a work ethic than my mother, and she less than her father. Theoretically, what happens with minimum wage is that, a younger person enters into the working force, and they work hard, and they advance, and then the more devotion and loyalty to the company they show, the better the pay becomes.

I agree, minimum should be increased. I'm behind it 100%, but really, a minimum job is not exactly what a career is made out of. Hard work and ethics are the cornorstone of what you can build a future on. People who are in a bad situation do need the help. I personally am on welfare, and live in low income housing, but really, I spend most of my time working on getting out of this bad situation. Welfare should be temporary. I also know that no one forced me into my situation. I don't blame anyone but myself. Really, I'm a young mother because I chose to be sexually active at a young age. I didn't go to collage, and I didn't choose to go after jobs that would pay me more. I feel lucky that I have that freedom. What outrages me, is the amount of people who live in my income based apartment complex who don't even bother to try. They sit around, don't work, and don't try to have a job. These people are the one who are making the availability to earn a decent living that much harder.

I'm off of the subject thought. An increase in minimum wage is good. We need to be able to bring more income to those who do work. This should be coupled by welfare reform. I don't have the answer to welfare reform, I don't even come close to knowing what could even dent the damage already done to the system, but really, this is what we need.

Exactly. What do people think will happen once this increase happens? The employer will either be forced to "eat" the price increase and lose money (yeah right). They will have to fire a few employees to make up the difference or they will have to raise the cost of their products.

If they do increase the cost of their products, was anything gained by raising the minimum wage? If people get fired for this pay increase, how does that help? When people think of a raise in the minimum wage all that they seem to be concerned with is how much more they will be making. They don't take into account that the cost of these products will also increase which, in my opinion, negates any benefit to increasing the minimum wage. This is nothing more than a vote buying scam.

This is true. Unfortunatly, there is price increases and layoffs despite the lack of a raise in minimum wage. What really wrong, is these companies are going to use a raise in minimim wage as a reason to increase the costs of products, and living. It really is a no win situation!

$15 would be great. But that is only if the government were to eat the extra cost. That'll never happen.

But if they were to provide better advantages and support to those making minimum wage that would be like a salary increase.

Health/Dental/and free lightrail, subway, bus transportation for long time minimum wage workers. That would cut down on the financial slump that they go into whenever there's a crisis like a broken car or sick kid.

Exactly! EVERYTHING is costing more and more and more no matter what people make! If anything I see a minimum wage raise as making up lost ground and the govt would force companies to keep product prices the same (even those a*****es at Walmart)!

Painfuly so, but they will take it anyway, why not make them use it on somethin useful. Use the death penalty more and get out of Iraq, and the govt will be like, "OMFG Look at all the money we arent wasting now!"

Putting someone to death typically costs more than a life in prison if you can believe it.

Oh my god, you want government price fixing? I'm not even going to get started on why that's not a good idea.

The fact of the matter is that the blame for low wages lies with all of us. All the time we shop at the retailer with the lowest prices, they will be looking at ways to squeeze their costs, their staff and their suppliers. The suppliers must then do the same to meet the demands of the retailer, since if they can't provide the prices the retailer demands, the retailer will go elsewhere.

We have no loyalty to anything but our own pockets. The average person in the western world will forsake their regular grocery store to save $10 a week.

At the same time, we demand that our savings and pensions perform. This requires the stocks that the banks invest your money in to perform. This requires the company to keep the bottom line up.

It is we, the general public, who force retailers to put their bottom line ahead of the people who work for them. If you want to bring about change, stop shopping for the lowest prices. Shout loud and clear that you will only shop at the stores that provide a fair living wage to employees and that pay a fair price for goods from impoverished nations, instead of exploiting them in the name of capitalism. Take your business away from the companies that pay a slave wage, and take it to the companies that properly look after their workers. But remember, it's going to cost YOU.

Or maybe you only want to make things better for people if it doesn't cost you money?
