Received Some Sad News
June 25, 2020 @ 09:14:31 am

We've just come home from our local, still-locked down, gym and pool where Megan has her swimming club. Sad news came through yesterday that one of her coaches, Nigel, died from Coronavirus on Tuesday. Nobody in the club even knew he was unwell.

Meg loves her swim club. She's always been a water baby, loved going to the pool while still a toddler and could swim by the time she was three. OK, so it wasn't really 'swimming'... more a sort of ... doggy paddle with loads of splashing thrown in for good measure.... but she loved it. She joined the local swimming club and has been under the tutelage of Nigel and the other coaches there since she was five. She's come on leaps and bounds and is now a strong swimmer.... certainly better than anybody else in her age group including the boys.

She's heartbroken that Nigel is gone. Not easy for a 7 year old to deal with. We've been down to the gym and she's laid her little floral tribute and a personally drawn and written message, adding to the growing number of flowers being laid against the wall outside the pool by the other children in the club.

He was a lovely man and everybody will miss him.

Hi Jennifer, sorry to hear of this. Myself, I have just been watching a Webcam of the funeral of my Son-in-Law's brother, just 43. Only a few were able to attend in person. These included my two little grandchildren, a boy and a girl. The boy, just 8, loved the guy and went to watch a local team with him many times (I tagged along sometimes) My heart goes out to him but sometimes I think the young are better able to assimilate such things than older people. Its taken on board and just so long as they are surrounded by genuine love then death gradually becomes part of life.

It was cancer, only diagnosed around Christmas.

Best that she start learning now instead of at 27.

Personally, if I were to a raise a child I would train them not to embrace sentiment at all.

Here's two quotes on Death which have helped to empower me:

"Don't cry for me; Beyond is where I've earned." ~ Iron Maiden

"I've served my time." ~ Korn

I'm so sorry, Jennifer. That's such a hard thing for children to process.

Sorry to hear that.

I was hoping we could all be spared being personally touched by this pandemic.

Condolences to your family, it’s tough to lose someone.

I had a couple of close family members die when I was around that age. I only had a vague (and incorrect) understanding of what it meant. I think most children process death better than we do (unless it is the death of a parent).

Still, you and your daughter have my condolences and sympathy.

Thank you to everybody who has offered kind words on this journal entry. I'm grateful for your thoughts.

Megan's a strong little girl and although still upset will come through. We've been told that Nigel's family plan for his funeral cortege to pass by the gym and pool. I asked Meg if she would like to see him go past and she said she would. I've been in touch with some of the other parents at swim club and now we're planning for a group of "Dolphins" to be there. Apparently we will still have to observe social distancing rules so we plan the children to line the side of the road, not stand as a group.

Meg's said that when swim club restarts, she's going to "try even harder" to be the best swimmer and help the others too who aren't so good because Nigel would like that.

Kids, eh..?

Sorry to read that.
I sure they were great at their job and will be missed by the community they serve.
