Über-General 490 points | lil stuffed animal August 03, 2006 @ 01:35:36 pm | i sit and watch her night after night
as she sits and wrights then laughs
over messages on her cell phone
from the lover i am yet to meet
it used to be just me and her
we had something special
just her and me
she would go on for hours on and on
about him
i got used to blocking it out
"the stupid girl"
id think to myself
when she has time i get attention
i cherish it so much
even though i have been there for her all her life
im redused to sttting in silence
all the tears the tantrums i have seen
but thats what you get for being full of wool and lifeless i suppose thats what you get for being a lil stuffed animal
under a bed

Über-General 490 points | emo July 18, 2006 @ 10:51:36 am | i got sick of people asking me what a emo is its like emotional hardcore and I have come under attack for referring to bands such as Weezer, My Chemical Romance, and Coheed & Cambria as emo. Emo did begin in the mid-80s as an offshoot of the D.C. hardcore scene--I am not in any way denying that. The term “emo” was originally short for “emotional hardcore,” a specific genre subset. Also, the term “Frisbee” is a brand name, a specific manufacturer of flying discs Well, first of all, emo is a subset of rock (I realize how general this is, but this is the basis of the definition, so bear with me). Generally, emo is associated with punk rock, especially hardcore, but recently bands from other genres (alt metal, hard rock, etc.) have been incorporating elements of emo into their work. The main characteristics of emo are based partly on lyrics, but more on the structure of the song--an emo song is designed to bring a catharsis, or a release, of emotion at a certain point in the song. Songwriting is far from scientific, so the actual product is usually not quite as cut and dry as this, but generally an emo song builds, both vocally and instrumentally, throughout from a comparatively calm or melancholy beginning to an emotional peak, sometimes followed by a “winding down” of sorts. Again, this is general and emo, like all genres, is fluid and subject to changes, but this is my understanding of what constitutes an emo song.Lyrically, emo is actually very broad. Emo-bashers commonly associate the genre with adolescent angst and bad breakups, and it is true the the genre lends itself particularly well to wallowing music. But here again, like all genres emo is not constrained to any particular topic. The characteristics of emo lyrics come more in their form than their content; lyrics are often obtuse, not literal, and may be essentially free verse set to music. Weezer is an exceptionally good example of this--in “Undone (The Sweater Song),” Rivers Cuomo sings the seemingly nonsensical couplets of “Oh no / It go / It gone / Bye-bye / Do I? / I think / I sink / And I die!” while (hey, what do you know?) building the instruments and vocals up to a fever pitch.
Obviously, this definition is fairly broad, and would allow many bands to be referred to as “emo.” A further distinction has already been suggested by Thursdayrage450, and I think it bears some consideration:
“I mentally divide it [emo] into 2 sub-genres. emo, and mtv emo. Emo is bands like sunny day real estate . . . , weezer . . . , or mineral. MTV emo is more along the lines of tbs, mcr, hawthorne heights (please note that me labeling a band mtv emo does not mean its crap)."
