wow... just to think I've been in Canada now for nearly 2 weeks! Thats most peoples holidays. They'd be on their way home tomorrow or something, but not me. I'm here for another 3/4 months!
Still hasn't really set in that I'm here yet. I've been organising this whole study abroad thing since November 2005!!! Now that its here... well... a lot of the canadians and that are asking what I think of Toronto and Canada and honestly... I don't know what to say. I can't say I love it, or hate it, just quietly contemplative about it. Its more that I feel at home.. or trying to feel at home. Which is ridicolous! (yes, I know... I cant spell!) How can you feel at home in somewhere that isn't your home country?
Anyhow, people want hear what I've been up to and boy its been fun! right... I've got a lot to say. First few days were just me getting used to the city and getting stuff sorted at uni. Then on the sunday 3rd sept, I went to Casa Loma, a castle like house built during the early 20th century. Very nice, very interesting, but... it wasnt a castle at all. Just a good place to see what Toronto looked like from the top of this hill. Toronto is an impressive city. It has this town-like-ness to it. Its all very comfortable, yet at the same time it can be a city. Go into the skyscrapper/financial district of the city and you feel so small and lonely. I also went to the ROM, a very large and impressive museum yet, I got bored, tired and hungry very quickly so I'll have go back sometime soon.
Then on monday it was labour day, a public holiday. So, I thought I'd go up the CN tower (the tallest freestanding man made structure in the world) and see what the views where like. They weren't too bad at all, but it did seem like a waste of time. There's not a lot you can do up there. lol. Except watch, and thats what I did. I watched the labour day parade start and could see this massive crowd setting off. So, I thought I'd go check it out. Ended up walking all the way to the end of the march, nearly 2 miles away at the exhibition centre. It was packed to the bone. Without knowing I somehow got in for free and watched the Canadian International Air Show. I was impressed. Especially, with the snowbirds, the canadian aerobatic display team. Not exactly the Red Arrows, but very close to that standard.
Then frosh (fresher) week started. It was absolute mayhem. Trying to get registered find what group I was in, what the hell was going on etc etc. I cant exactly say the Canadians are very organised. Anything with more than 3 people becomes a major chore. lol. Did a hell of a lot of socialising. Not exactly sure what did, but certainly a lot of football, chanting and walking. Went to some clubs, including one at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Also, had some competitions, charity events, some people went to a Blue Jays baseball game and a free concert. I didnt since I had about 5 different orientation events to go too. There is a limit to how much info one person can take on board and I soon reached it. We also had a large group "UC idol" talent contest. We won, which was really cool, but the best thing we did without a doubt was the "tradition".
Many people came up with theories for what the UC tradition was but it was better than everything everyone came up with. It involved us all (all 500+ students) crossing roads to one of the busiest roads in Toronto, Bloor St. Then suddenly we were stopped at the cross roads and sat in the middle of the intersection of Bloor and Yonge, apparently the busiest intersection in Canada!!! It was extronarily weird. But it was so cool. This bunch of students dressed in blue and red causing absolute mayhem to all people travelling in Toronto. I can clearly say its not something people do everyday. lol.
And, now... I start my lessons at uni. Moved into my house for the year. Very peculiar way that they run the house but it must work. Unfortunately it seems we've got one very loud canadian who keeps eating and drinking everyone's food and milk (mine in particular... bastard), and keeps bringing all his mates around. And, you wonder why the house is in threat of being burglared. I've ended up having to buy a new phone, and got a second hand laptop that is absolutely perfect. Nearly as good as my computer back home at half the cost. And, now we get to today. I would love to be able to get stuff done but I'm too tired too (late night of drinking and not much sleep). I probably wont be on TFS much since its becoming hard to fit back into place after such a long break. But, I'm writing this so I must think someone must care!
