I try to go see him as much as I can, but he's gotten so quiet over the past couple of years, so sometimes I feel awkward going over there knowing that we'll both just sit there and barely say a word

	Well, maybe he'd enjoy having you read to him? It may not even matter what you are reading, but just being able to hear your voice would give him a little boost! Try it, just once.... I'll bet he'll ask you to do it, again.
