Tsunamis are complicated.

They are caused by underwater earth quakes (so they aren't really Oceanography - hehe, more like Marine Geography).

No - because I have to go teach myself about loads of other stuff

But in brief:

A tsuniami is a group of surface gravity waves with increadibly fast wave speed. The period of the waves is between 5 minutes and an hour and a half. The wavelength is usually greater than 200km.
The evect the ocean from the top right down the water column to the bottom.
In deep oceans, the height of theb tsunami waves are below 2 meters, so if you are out at sea you will not be able to see them, but when they reach the shallower coastal waters, the wave speed decreases, the wave length decreases and this causes a dramatic increase in the height of the wave. Hence the height of the wave when a Tsunami hits land is so great.

The tsunami is quite often formed by an underwater eartquake, eruption or disturbance of some kind.

Sorry it is brief
