I love Americans, particularly the fact that they come to this country on holiday and don't know our tip culture!
Almost made as much in tips as I did in wages today thanks to two bus loads of American tourists.
Thank you America. | |

| I actually generally like Americans as customers anyway as for some reason they just seem happier than customers from other countries so they are more pleasant to serve.
Only problem with working with tourists is I've become extremely prejudiced towards people based on what country they are from. I find it hard not to put people in boxes. |

Something tells me those peeps were aware of things; just a case of when one is on vacation, usually they are feeling much happier; and more generous. |

Or maybe Jmo is just good at his job. I always tip generously to servers who appreciate it rather than those who expect it. |

I have no doubt that he is; but since he specifies that the big tippers were the American tourist, I tend to think it's them feeling happy/generolus. Most, when they are feeling happy, want to share that feeling with others. I know I do. |

| Curiosity... what is the tipping culture in the UK?
In the US, it's about 15-20% of the total bill. Less if your server sucks. |

10% in restaurants but rarely if ever at places like coffee booths where you pick up the coffee yourself from a coffee bar (like where I work). |

In coffee bars they usually have a tip jar at the register. Often people will dump the change from their purchase or just throw a buck in. I'm not much of a tipper in coffee bars - mostly because I rarely go to them so I have enough sticker shock as it is.
In restaurants though, I usually start at 15%. If service sucks, it goes down in accordance with the level of suckiness. If service is really good, I top out at 20%. If service is prompt and acceptable, they stay at 15%. |
