I've been reading a Mary Shelly novel, The Last Man, and it brings up some interesting questions. What if an uncurable plague
rears its ugly head on humanity? Would billions be put up for an unstoppable slaughter, or would all of humanity be destroyed? What if human kind found a cure for it, not within medicine, but within immunities? I suppose that cancer could be considered this, however it cannot be threatening to all of humanity.
