I was in a car accident on friday. It was my fault; I looked down for a split second and slammed into the back of a station wagon. I have an 05 Elantra. My entire front end is smashed in to the tires almost in a straight line, but my headlights didn't break. One of the safety features of my car is that if I get in a bad enough head on collision the front end will accordion in and the engine will drop. Luckily the engine didn't drop but the air bag did deploy. Because of these safety features the damage is a lot worse than it should be. The car I hit? Small dent and a broken tail light. Unbelievable. | |

Better a disposable car than a disposable you.
We were once rear ended by a Japanese car co-incidentally.
The guy was speeding and distracted as he came to a line of stationary cars. I seen the look of horror in his eyes as he looked back at the road and seen my car a few yards in front of him.
He slammed on the brakes so hard the front of his car hit the road and bits of his car started to fly off BEFORE he hit me.
Nobody died and loss of material things cannot compare to a human life.
Hope the insurance company look after you OK. |

The fact that the car crumple reduce the impulse of the crash by spreading the force of the impact over a much longer time. Had your car been stiff you would have felt a lot worse today, trust me.
Like Bendover said, "better a disposable car". |

36102 points | Before the Honda Civic I drive now... I used to have a Hyundai Elantra. One of the first thing I noticed that it IS a gas guzzler for a non-Continental car. The amount I was spending on petrol - I might as well be driving a Jag!
It can be pretty problematic too. From what I've heard, non-Conts are usually low maintenance, but the Hyundai was giving me problems coming into the end of the first year. I might not know much about engines and stuff, but I religiously check the car and service it ever 6 months. Repairs cost a bomb, and the problems kept coming back. Maybe I'm over sensitive, but I cannot live with any kind of rattling noises, power-less pick ups and a non-smooth acceleration. And I CANNOT afford an S500 so I lived with it.
Nevertheless... the car did SAVE my life once. A drunkard slammed on the side, coming through on a roundabout. If the car wasn't so heavy - I would have wound up in the ditch at the middle of the roundabout. At least that's what I felt, seeing that the other car's front was totally smashed and my car spun, yet stayed put.
I never have a problem with the Civic now. Until I'm lucky enough to be able to afford the Saab 900 - I'll stick with it.
I hope you're ok... be careful - and do be safe. |
