What makes a straight man want to play with a gay mans heart?

My friend has feelings for a straight man, the straight guy nows how my friend feels about him but says he doesnt feel the same and isn't gay.

This straight man has caused my friends alsorts of problems, the most serious one being depression because as we all know its a horrible feeling when feelings aren't reciprocated.

The straight guy doesn't leave my friend alone though, constantly calls him, starts arguements to only throw his feelings in my friends face.

My fiend got brave and decided to take control of the situation, he wrote the straight man a letter to say how much he cared about him but it was too painful and he was ending the friendship, my friend has not spoken to the straight guy now for 42 days and im so proud of him because I know how hard this has been for him.

It now turns out the straight guy has been leaving messages with mutual friends for my friend to get in contact with him because get this...he misses him

It's disgusting how he's playing with my friends heart like this

isn't it possible that he really wants to be friends with the guy?

No he uses him constantly for money, a shoulder to cry on and even flirts with him...but he still says he's not gay.

Is it possible (at all) that the straight guy wants to be friends with your friend, but is afraid that any offers of friendship might be taken the "wrong" way?

(edited)

Since I read your response to adrinachrome...

I guess it's possible that the straight guy has some feelings that he doesn't know how to deal with. Perhaps that makes him act like an a**

The straight bloke leads my friend on and as soon as my friend thinks there's a chance it could go somewhere the straight bloke cuts the friendship off, then in a few days/weeks is begging for forgiveness.

In a sense he leads my friend on to fail, this is like a big game to the straight bloke, if you knew a friend had feelings for you you wouldnt throw it in their face constantly and you'd avoid situations you know could get messy.
