I am the waffle chops!
Public entry SAT's
May 13, 2008 @ 07:57:36 am
My daughter is doing her SAT's in school this week, the run up to these tests has been a nightmare.
I've had to watch Kat's have sleepless nights, cry, throw massive tantrums, have diarrhea all because she's worried herself senseless over these poxy tests.
These tests have nothing to do with the kids, the kids are assessed daily in their lesson time, the teachers always know what level our children are at, these tests are about the teachers abilities and the schools performance so it can all be recorded in a league table.

I just sent Kat's into school looking very tearful telling me she's going to fail because all the other kids get brilliant marks in her class...the test has already set her up to fail if she's going in with this attitude.

Anyone else going through this?

Tests are so much easier if you don't get all stressed out about them. Maybe study once or twice and just not worry about it.

The pre-SAT's help quite a bit too.
After you take it, you get a list of your answers and you can see which ones you got wrong. Then you go on the website they give you and type in the number on your paper or something and it'll show the question, the right answer, and explain it.

They don't do that in the UK...these tests are about making sure the schools aren't failing the kids. Its also very difficult trying to explain to an 11 year old about stress and how not to do it.

If thats the case test the teachers!

Hmm. We have those too but they're not the SAT's I don't think. The SAT's have something to do with college I think because it's not a required test.
Yeah on those ones for the school evaluation I don't study or anything at all. I just go and take the test. If I do bad then oh well. It doesn't really affect me, just the way the school is funded and the schools priorities(Sp?) and stuff. I don't worry about those at all.

Kids in england get tested at 7, 11, 14 and then go straight into GCSE's at 15/16.

No child does well under that kind of stress so these tests cannot be accurate.

Yeah, idk.
I don't think it's something kids should stress over. School shouldn't ever be that stressfull.

Hi hun,

Listen, you need to tell her to stop worrying, She is a genius in her own right and even if she doesn't do well in these it doesn't matter because the important ones are her GCSE's. All she can do is her best and if she goes into school telling herself that she is going to do badly then she mare than likely will do. We know she can do it, one way or another. There is something in the news this morning talking about abolishing them, I know this doesn't help right now but she may not have to do them again. All we can do is be there to support her and I bet there are lot's of other kids feeling exactly the same but she just doesn't realise it. It is probably even harder for her coming from another school and she is now really starting to find her feet and as her new teacher said she is far brighter than the other school gave her credit for. She will be fine, don't show her your worry. I 'll give you a great big hug tomorrow then when I take you home i'll give her a kick up the arse, lol. Love you.

It's not really fair is it? It's like asking a 13/14 year old what they want to do with the rest of their life. They probably don't know!

I'll raid the cat ittle box haha!

A few parents were called in for a meeting with the teachers about the SAT's and at the end i had a few questions...well f**k me if you'd heard them, it was like group bullying in the end and i was even told i wasnt asking the right sort of questions and all i wanted to know was did the grades determine what classes they would be in in secondary school

That was when i smelt a f**king big rat!

I can't believe they still do that, it's bloody rediculous really. If they are gonna separate the kid then at least give them tghe same opportunities to get the good grades. I remember I was in a lower group at school and I wasn't allowed to get a higher grade than a D or and E in science because it wasn't my strongest subject yet I distictly remember Mr Kozlowski saying to me that it was a shame because he thought I was cabable of at least a C by that point.
Also I think it's important to remember that since Leaving school I was stil able to go to college and get some great grades, still f**ked around too much and I ahve had some good jobs and some not so good jobs. I have learnt more since leaving school than I didwhen I was there. I'm not saying that school isn't important because it is, very. I'm saying that life teaches you more lessons than any teacher will. I'm back at college again and I might go again next year. You can learn at any time.
