Public entry RIP Julia
August 28, 2008 @ 04:10:12 pm

I woke up to find my blue parakeet Julia dead. I didn't even know she was sick and she looked fine yesterday! Skye, my mostly white parakeet seems confused and lost. She keeps hopping around the cage like she's looking for Julia. I'm going to clean the cage and everything in it really well and maybe get a new bird this weekend. Maybe. I might at least look and see what PetSmart has to offer. Dad actually asked if I wanted to get a new bird tonight. Um no. I've had Julia for just about 5 years now.

So yeah I'm feeling pretty sad and down right now. I've got my fat cat Raven still and the dog Lilias, but it's still sad when any pet passes away.

So sorry for your loss..
it is hard losing a pet, we become so attached to them, one of the 'family'.
I think you're other bird does understand though, and is a little 'panicky' it sounds..
their life spans to my understanding is anywhere from between 5, to up to as much as 9 years..
maybe your dad is right though in getting a new bird; not to replace your loss, but for your other bird, to give him company..

It's always sad when a pet dies. Especially when it's so sudden. It's the sudden deaths that mess with you. Like "He didn't look sick yesterday. At least I don't think so. Could he have been sick and me not know?"

At any rate, I agree that it is too soon to replace Julia but I do understand that your other bird might be a traumatized by the whole situation. I mean when you use to someone being by your side 24/7, it would be very upsetting for them to sudden not be there.

Maybe when enough time has passed, you can look into getting another bird.

I got budgies and was told to always give it at least 3 weeks before putting a new bird in with a mate after one dies in case it died from a virus. the remaining one may also be sick but not showing signs. the last thing you want is 3 dead birds. I lost a budgie a couple of months ago and waited 4 weeks before getting another one.....I now have a pair of playful bubgies again....
