I got ripped off today. Cried some. Sophie is watching Thomas the Tank Engine.

Public entry Fusing & fun
March 28, 2007 @ 11:07:23 pm
Well, not much to report today. Can fuse pieces pretty seemlessly now and it looks like we're in business to start work on the angels. What shade should they be? I think it would be pretty if they were all slightly different shades from red to purple.

Made something slightly funny and a bit rude while testing a new technique,

but he can hide behind the mushroom

and a bath bomb that smells like a bakery

Public entry A gift for a friend
March 28, 2007 @ 01:53:14 am
A friend of mine wanted a spiderman and venom necklace, so I made one for her.

It all starts with a drawing. I draw the design onto the plastic like this:

cut it out, and then bake it in the oven. When it's baked it looks like this:

Then I put it in the oven again and shape it while it's hot:

But all in all today was not a good day. I'm so tired I started to make mistakes and cut myself. Ouch. I'm still experimenting with the plastic work on the angel project. Because the angels need to be bigger than the plastic sheets I have to work with, I will have to fuse them together in a way that makes them look seemless. Have been experimenting with a few different methods but nothing I am happy with yet.

Public entry 6 angels
March 26, 2007 @ 07:00:58 pm
We are going to make 6 angels for Jeanette's ceiling. This is a rough idea of what I have in mind:

We have to make a spidey man necklace for a friend too.

Public entry Geese
March 24, 2007 @ 09:24:07 pm
I made some geese today. They're the best thing I've done so far. The picture doesn't come out that well, but you can sort of see the detail through the magnifying glass.

Worked on some autumn leaves too, not that happy with them though. Wanted more translucence.

Public entry Wooo

Somebody bought the planet pins that Marcus gave me the idea for. They're going to a nice lady in Georgia.

On the other hand jewelry making isn't going so good. I tried all day to make a pendant that looked like one of those chocolate hearts but couldn't get it to look right. Tried a bunch of other things too that didn't work.

There is one sort of success though: A shell necklace.

Public entry Just when
March 22, 2007 @ 08:56:33 am
You've had an absolutely horrible day and want to give up, somebody can say something so nice and give you back all your hope.

Today I found out the financial aid money from school isn't coming. I can't tell anybody this and try to pretend everything is fine. It is having to pretend that is harder than if I was on my own. The store didn't sell anything today either and I was quite sad and feeling not good enough.

Then one of my customers left feedback in my store:

and just a few words like that give me back my hope.

Public entry Building a business from scratch
March 20, 2007 @ 03:04:47 pm
Today I'm going to work on packaging. Whatever it is has to ship well, and I want people to be happy and feel like they're getting a special present.

At first I was using the little altoids tins, but I've run out. Buying a metal box around here costs $1, and I sell things for $2-$10, buying more boxes isn't going to work. So I got to make my own.

Yesterday a very nice lady bought this:
link [www.etsy.com]

It is hard to package because of the pins. I ended up putting a cork on the ends to protect the postman and making a hatbox like thing by cutting two strips of cardstock, wrapping them into circles, stapling them, and gluing endcaps on them. One is slightly bigger than the other so they join together to form a box. I hope it holds up okay in the mail. She should get it in 2-3 days so we'll see.

I might go to the store today and buy a circle cutter, because it's 40% off and it'd help tremendously.

As for baby, she just woke up and is trying to hold my hands so I can't type so bye.

Public entry How things turned out
March 18, 2007 @ 07:42:38 pm
It is noon now and the varnish on the angel is drying. Made the orchids into hair pins, but I need to start over because they'd look nicer on blonde or red hair than dark and no matter how hard I try, I can't pull them off. Oh well. At least bonding the flowers to hairpins with super glue works.

As for the angel, it is sitting on the shelf while the varnish dries. The varnish starts out milky and turns clear. It has to cure for 24 hours. We will see how that goes.

Marcus gave me an idea. Bulletin board pins shaped like planets. I think I made Jupiter too small though. It is supposed to be a lot bigger than saturn, but I made it smaller.

The camera ran out of batteries last night so I took a nap and started taking pictures later in the morning. I don't have the knack for taking pictures. The flash makes things look too shiny and changes the colors. Just now my Dad dropped by with a tripod. I'll experiment with that.

Baby is nusing right now too so I'm going to work on business cards.

Public entry Goals

It is hard to get things done with a toddler around. They live in the moment and they literaly pull you into their lives. My daughter's heart is so big and her feelings are so fragile. She wants to help, but she is too little and messes things up.

Starting an online store is tough when somebody always wants your attention. Everything matters from taking photos, cropping the pictures to make them look nice, picking the categories to list your items in... That part is harder than making the jewelry. I suppose there is an art to everything - but I'm not good at that yet.

Now, while she is sleeping I will make a purple angel, some flowered bobby pins. I will list the set of planetary bulletin board pins, and ship off the doves and tweety bird.

Before my daughter was born, I made a schedule the night before and followed it the next day. Comparing the estimated and actual times to get things done was a fun game. It's not fun anymore. Schedules don't work when everything runs on Sophie time. I am such a mess now and need to get organized. Need something like a floating to do list in my head.

I'm going to try this thing I heard about on TV last night. You're supposed to picture the rooms of your house, and make it into a story so

TO DO:
make angels and flowers
take pictures
list them on line
tidy the house
read self help book

SO:
Picture yourself on a sofa covered with angels and flowers reading
a self help book. There is a camera on the table and a messy
stack of pictures. In fact, the whole room is a mess...

I'm going to try to keep that image in the back of my mind, so if there is a free moment when Sophie isn't occupied I'll remember and rush to do something hopefully.
