Public entry Kitty of 14 years, Gone
July 09, 2008 @ 08:48:45 pm
It was my wifes cat.

Let me start by saying I'm not a cruel person, I'm just realistic.

Pets in my opinion are just that, pets. They are a living form of amusement that needs money and love to maintain.

My wifes cat of 14 years, which I'm deathly alergic to has been becoming a health hazard for our baby and us.

The cat is old to say the least, it doesn't move around very much all day. It doesn't seem to have the energy to jump up on the couch, it needs to be lifted up onto things. We took it to the vet about a year ago and the vet told me that its teeth where totaly rotten. It was going to cost us a good chunk of change to removed all of the cats teeth.

So we simply feed it soft food, in efforts that it would make the cat feel better when it was eating. The cat mind you weighs 17lbs so it has no problem eating and maintianing a heavy weight.

Recently its been jumping into the babies crib and peeing. NOT COOL, it also pees in the babies room for god only knows what reason. It throws up every day in a random place. The other day it fell off the window cill and seemed to be acting very erratic.. We think its lost its mind in some way. We also think its in a great deal of pain.

We know it has lived a good life and is now become a pain in the ass. We could take it to the vet and try and extend its life longer by getting it whatever operation our vet sees fit to perscribe but honestly the cat cost us about 100 dollars to nuter it and de-claw it. Its simply not cost effective.

So we came to the discision to put him down. The vet charges 100 dollars to do that. SPCA charges 50 to abandon the pet with them. We gave them 50$ and the cat carrier (they said they needed them). We don't know what happened to the cat if he found a home or if he was put down.

Its a screwed up situation, but like the late George Carlin said.

"When you buy a pet your purchasing a small tradgity, because no matter what you do, its never going to end well."

You gave it away!!!!!

I would have killed it myself and buried it in the garden but then i have had to do that to a lot of suffering animals on the farm.

RIP Puddy tat XXX

I could care less about the cat honestly, but my wife is very attached to it.

I couldn't put the cat down myself and look her in the eye. I love my wife deeply and I just couldn't do that.

You did the right thing. My bro got a dog when he was in college, he ended up not being able to take care of it (it was crazy and found trouble EVERYWHERE) so he put him off on my dad, my dad could not take care of him anymore so we gave him to the rescue shelter. We did check up on him and he was addoped 2 weeks later by a family.

Yes, you definitely did the right thing. When they get so old, it's crueler keeping them alive and in pain.

I dont see how your wife cares about the cat if she can give it away to die, an extra $50.00 and the animal of 14 years could have been put to sleep after some obvious suffering. Cats or any other animals dont pee in babys beds or on the floor for no reason and the cats mouth obviously hurt.

Well, I don't have alot of money, and I really don't have alot of money to spend on things like this. The shelter will do whatever is best for the cat. If they feel it needs to go down, it will go down. If it can be found a home, it will have a home. We can't afort do take it to the vet to the extent that the animal is going to need.

Minor scrapes and worming stuff, i can see spending but for a animal that is this old, I don't see it as a cost effect pet.

i have 3 dogs and 2 cats, all my dogs are rescued and im by no means rich, but when their time comes, they will be put to sleep on our bed where they love to be rather than just given away or taken to a vets,a place all animals fear and to be put to death there, yeah im mad,ive paid nearly £400 on one of my cats before, but to us there part of our family and you dont give your family up or put to sleep when there not well, you try everything to make them well and be with them at the end.

Yup, we had a similar problem only in reverse. It was my husbands cat puking and crapping everywhere. Fortunately, we went on vacation and when we came back he was gone.

Thank you jeanettesianrachal! I dont understand how everyone is saying that they understand, How very sad for the poor cat to be taken some where else to die or to be taken to another home to die!!! I am so upset by this story I am honestly sick!!! If you dont have the money to take care of animals then dont have them! I by know means have money by I damn sure have an extra 50.00 to make sure the animal was put to sleep in a comfortable surounding at least with your wife there! My dog and cat both died in my arms, one put to sleep at my house and another of cancer that took her quick.

Poor cat? What about poor wife, she had this pet for 14 years and loved it dearly. There is no good way to handle this, what would it matter if it died by my hand, in my wifes arms or in the SPCA? The end result is the same, the cat died. Well we don't know that for sure, and honestly we don't want to know. We would like to think the cat lived forever, that is our way of dealing with it.

Your limit on what your willing to spend on a pet is diffrent than mine, obviously. The only person I truly care about in this tradigity is my wife.

I guess to me I dont understand the "tragedy" to your wife, as much as I hate that my animals die and I do go through my own hell when they do, in this case I think the tragedy is to the cat. The cat was going to die that was a given it is the way it was handled that I have a problem with, I think your wife would feel better if she dealt with the death of the cat rather then wonder if its still alive? I could never give my animals away to die else where. I definatly dont think an animal should be kept alive when it is suffering. We just wont agree on the subject thats all.

I could never have done that..
I would have had the cat put to sleep for his own good; and at the same time, had the peace of mind of knowing the cat was out of his misery, and not possibly in the wrong hands.
