Public entry Coffee
August 26, 2008 @ 08:21:35 am
Why is it so important?

Don't get me wrong, I like coffee. I drink lots of it, ok well technically I drink lattes, but still regular coffee with cream will do in pinch.

But what I don't get is when you are opening a library 24 hours for the first time, is it soooo important to have?

You'd think that say a security camera system that hasn't arrived yet would be more of a concern, or the extra computers and laptops have not arrived, or the fact that the wrong key has been issued, and the room you are supposed to be occupying is locked. Shouldn't the fact that you have to call security to come open it faze you a little? Just a little?

NOPE, it was a crisis, because you could not find the power cord to the coffee pot. To the point that a new one was purchased from the local drug store.

And I'm not talking about supplying coffee to the staff, so they stay awake, this is free coffee for the public. Sure we want people to come, and we've tried to make the place welcoming, but seriously? The only water supply is from the bathrooms. I know water from the sink should be safe to drink, but ewwww.

Maybe I'm just weird, but if food or drink goes into a public bathroom, I can't eat it. Grosses me out, completely. To know that is where the water came from? ewww I'll pass. And offering that to the public, isn't that just a health hazard?

Keep in mind I know exactly how often and well those bathrooms are cleaned, sure they appear to have the trash taken out and large stains removed, but when you go in there several times a day, daily you notice the little things, like dust bunnies in the corner, and small stains in the sink, that take forever to go away. I mean, how well can one person clean a whole floor and two bathrooms in less than 15 minutes?

I'm not knocking the cleaning crew, they obviously have a hard job, and very tight schedule to get a lot of things done. For the most part they do ok, like I said, on first glance or casual use they appear clean. But that doesn't mean I want to drink or eat anything that has been there. Something about public bathrooms I guess.

Maybe I'm just over stressed, its been a long few weeks preparing for this, and today was still a long day with lots left to do. I'm just not seeing how coffee is the most important thing. It seems like a case of missing the forest for the trees. Sigh.

I'm going to bed soon and hope that nothing horrible happens by the time I go in tomorrow, to do it all again. I can only hope it doesn't turn into the star wars bar scene.

You could say I shouldn't worry, but I do. I'm sure we'll work out the kinks eventually. Keeping the place nice, neat and welcoming has been part of my responsibilities for over 10 years now, its kinda hard to deal with. I'll adjust, it was just always a sense of pride when hearing people say "oh, you work there, that was always my favorite library, always so nice compared to the rest of them." Kinda like a "job well done" kudo, cause we all know working for the state in education, we don't see rewards in large raises.
