This past week I had to write a paper for a class, and I chose the labels society gives us. Here I was was minding my own business writing my paper at the lower level of the label and what would you know I was the subject of my own paper. Two guys gave me the so call "stinkeye" look judgeing me because I was sitting in the spot they hoped and wished for. I could tell they were judgeing me without me saying anything, it was pretty funny 'cause here I was a girl writing a paper and BAM I became the object of my own theroy. To think about we all have been VICTIMS of the word STEREOTYPE and why is that? Do we let society chose our path and we play the role? Or do we take a stand and say "NO I refuse to be part of it"
I know that I'm sick and tried of being looked at and people making judgments due to the way I dress, or the kind of music I listen to. I'm just tried of people looking at me with so much confusion in their eyes. Yes I'm a girl who wears band shirts, jeans, my hair isnt in the right place, I don't have the right shoes on with my outfit, no I don't bat for the other team. I'm just a girl trying to live life just like YOU. What you don't know is that I'm actually one of the nicest person you'll ever meet. Instead of taking one look at someone make your judements and move on to the next person, take a little time to realize that the person you're about to pa** judgments might be going through some tough time, or they like being the guy/girl they are inside. | |

Minister 12793 points | I don't know you or your "style".
But I will tell you why people do what they do.
Every aspect of life involves people chosing one thing over another.
Do i want an apple or a orange?... if so.. this one has a bruise and this one doesn't. They all require you to "judge" things that you see. Typicaly when you see a bruise on something it doesn't taste good. And typicaly when you see someone who doesn't care about thier apearance, they might not be the quality in the inside.
Make sence? |

No, that makes no sense when applied to humans. Her style isn't like a bruise on a piece of old fruit. |

Minister 11550 points | I think a lot of people in society give out labels as a form of social exclusion. For example, when was the last time you heard anyone say emo, chav or hoodie in a nice way?
Unfortunately that's society for you. The important thing to do is to stick two fingers up at the world and live the way you want.
I know what you mean about labels and stereotypes. Because I'm black, I've met people who were surprised I listened to Evanescence and Nightwish, that I actually speak in proper English, and that I wasn't born in Africa or the Caribbean.

Edit:- I just realised you're American, so you probably don't know what a chav is lol |

Ogler 22265 points | Your style, I hope, is a reflection of who you are...the books you read, the music you listen to, what you think about the world. If that's the case, you are sending a message. Some people won't like the message and that's GOOD. Those are the people you don't really want to know anyway. In a way, your style can be a filter. See it as working for you rather than against you. It's helping YOU weed out the assholes rather than them weeding you out. Anyway, you've won the battle...you like yourself. Be proud of who you are and everything you represent. |

Points Whore 818 points | Yeah, if I see a apple with a bruise I'm not gonna buy it. If I see someone who is so call "dirty" I'm gonna think their homeless. I don't know you either, but what do you think people say about you? I can take one look at your picture and say "oh, yea he's a jock who only cares about his looks and wants to get laid" I could be completely wrong and your just looking out for your health. And that guy who looks "dirty" might just got off of work. We don't know. I understand were all gonna make judgments because lets face it we do it everyday. But I'm just a girl trying to go to class, learn from my teachers, I walk around campus with my headphones on because music is the only thing that keeps me from going insane. Dose that make me unapproachable? All I'm saying is that the stares and the pity comments can actually hurt the person your talking about. But that's just me! |

Minister 12793 points | come on now vizzy, your telling me if you saw a bum covered head to toe in trash (bruises).
You would rush right over to him and get to know what kind of person he was on the inside?
Lets be honest if you where in a room with a hansom doctor and a dirt covered tatooed bum, you would wouldn't be the slightest bit tempted to "judge" one to be of less social value? |

Hahaha....so what is a chav?
Like I'm hispanic and I don't listen to the type of music society tells me I should. So I'm down with ya! |

I said your example of bruised fruit didn't come close to being applicable to humans. In fact, it came of as incredibly condescending. AS if you were somehow equating her with rotten fruit. |

Minister 12793 points | I was speaking metaphoricly.
She is neither a orange nor is she rotten fruit.
So answer my doctor/bum scenario, honestly please. |

Generally, someone who wears tracksuits and bling (big gold jewellery that looks fake lol) and listens to rap and hip hop music. Generally thought of as dumb, welfare state scroungers and irresponsible parents. Unfortunately, nearly anyone who wears tracksuits might get lumped into this category.
Stupid society! |

OF COURSE we ALL make judgements based on apperances. HOWEVER, my response was to your initial comment which made no sense. Whatever your point was, it was poorly communicated. You seem to think you've made some profound statement here. Like none of us were previously aware that judgements were passed on apperances. DOH! I didn't state that in my reply to her because we all already know that. Rather, I addressed her style and sense of self and told her to be proud. You compared her to rotten fruit. |

Monk 34616 points | I've found that those that were the quickest to judge were the ones with the most faults, insecure and people with low self esteem will do that to other's to in some way try to compensate for their own shortcomings by pointing out other's. In short they don't think highly of themselves and can't face themselves in the mirror so they don't look into it and they pick out all the faults the can and verbalize them to other's so they won't have to look in that mirror and face themselves. Because then they would have to face themselves and see themselves as they truly are and they don't like seeing the ugly in them.JMO |

I will just point out that being a bum covered head to toe in trash is a LOT different from someone dressing very casually or differently, which I think is what she was describing |
