While attending jamaica College in the mid and late 90's I never aspired to become a jockey instead my ambition was to become a physician now medicine loss is racing gain having left Jamaica College in 1998 I discovered racing merely by chance.A friend of mine had an uncle who was a big racing fan and one day he told me I looked as though I was born to be a jockey,in 2000 he took me to the racetrack and introduced me to trainer Robert Taylor however he did'nt have enough horses and I moved in with trainer Garrett Arscott who apprenticed me and eventually recommended me to the Jockeys' Training School in early 2002.I spent six months at the Jockeys' School and graduated on November 26,2002 with 20 other young riders including subsequent champion apprentice Paul Francis,Oneil Mullings,Dane Nelson and Philip Clunis. The experience at the Jockeys' Training School was invaluable as in additional to horsemanship the curriculum included a range of subjects such as Physical Education,Ethics,Deportment,First Aid,Horse Anatomy,Show Jumping and Academics. What more the legendary jockey George Hosang was one of the riding instructors in the latter stages and this was a great learning experience for me,I also had the distinction of delivering the valedictory address at the graduation ceremony. After graduating from the Jockeys' Training School,I waited six weeks before winning my first race in dramatic fashion on saturday January 11,2003.This shock win came aboard the 99-1 outsider,Exchange Only for trainer Gresford Smith in a 1700 metre race for 100,000 claimers, the free running mare holding up by one and a half length from highly fancied Blitzkrieg with former champion Shane Ellis aboard.Exchange Only paid a fantastic $1,618.00 one of the largest win dividends ever recorded at Caymanas Park for the minimum $10.00 stake,It was a day I will never forget the trainer told me to ride the horse from it left the gates and see what happens .I was very surprise when I saw she was still in front passing the furlong pole and it was then that I realise she could win,I was so happy when she passed the post I almost fell off, other winners such as Call to Arms and Still A King were to follow in quick succession. After finishing 2 of my 3 years apprenticeship I have know grown to become an inform rider who is joint second in the standings with 28 winners so far that season 2005, I was putting much of what George Hosang taught me at the Jockeys' School into practice now that I was getting good rides.I am riding with a lot of confidence since the start of that year but still believe I have a lot more to learn with my apprenticeship due to end in December,I have to keep the momentum going so that when the time comes to be a full-fledged jockey I can make the transition. To date early 2005,I have ridden 28 winners including 10-1 shot Select Princess in the Clifford Stewart Memorial Cup,Celebration Time in the Mercury Sprint, upsetter He's A Ranking,Common D in the Red Stripe Claiming Sprint and Lady Shalimar,Another notable win came aboard Barrington Rambally trained Flying Tiger produced a blitzing run at 1000 metres straight to erase the mighty Eros' track record of 56 and three fifths of a second, posting 56 and two fifths at the distance in the 12th race at Caymanas Park.Sent off as a 5-1 shot in the big 16-horse overnight allowance field,Flying Tiger chased Natural Prince out of the chute for the first two furlong before hitting top speed coming onto the main track and crossing the dummy rail, enjoying apprentice Andron Findley three kilogram claim, the speedy 5 year old gelding surged to the lead with 52 kilograms and thwarted Natural Prince who tried hard to rally under Joe Buchanan but was safely held by two lengths at the end,Philip Feanny trained Eros held the record for more than 13 years, established on September 1991.The mark was equal in October 2002 by another Feanny Stakes runner Rakkadash,A notable win came also aboard Samaraontheloose to romps the Lotto Dash Trophy for native bred two year old maidens in track record time of 34 and one fifths of a second over 600 metres at Caymanas Park on Saturday May 14,2005.Samaraontheloose is owned by Lopez Dream Stables and trained by Barrington Rambally.By the ending of the season I finished 9th in the championship and was nominated for most improve apprentice jockey with a total of 30 winners that season,My mother was not keen on me becoming a jockey but she was now supportive of my efforts and was proud of me,with the help of my agent Markland Hutchinson who is popular called Nicky Waugh,I hopes to create an even bigger impact in the months ahead,I am mindful of the fact that it would take honesty, application and dedication but one day I hopes to emulate my mentor Andrew Ramgeet and become a champion jockey.
