“Of Mice and Men” (Chapter One)

Q1: Where and when do we first meet George and Lennie?
A1: We first meet George and Lennie in a clearing by a stream at sunset, they camp there for the night and sleep under the trees. They are on their way to a new job on a ranch and have been dropped off in the wrong place by the bus driver. This has caused then to have to walk an extra four miles in the heat of the day.

Q2: Describe George in your own words?
A2: George is small, clever and much more careful than Lennie, he acts like a guardian for Lennie and treats him like a child at times. George takes his anger out on Lennie, and shows him no respect.

Q3: Describe Lennie in your own words?
A3: Lennie is tall and heavily built, he is child-like and immature for his age, he is forgetful and irresponsible, and Lennie obviously aspires to be like George, this is shown by Lennie imitating George’s movements and actions.

Q4: Why does George tell Lennie to stop drinking the water?
A4: George tells Lennie to stop drinking the water because it is not flowing, if the people of Weed had followed them they would be able to tell that the stream had been disturbed.

Q5: Why is George angry with the bus driver?
A5: George is angry with the bus driver because he had told them that the ranch was just down the road, George then found it to be four miles away. George was concerned that because there was no chance of them arriving at the ranch on time it may cost them their job opportunity.

Q6: Where are George and Lennie going?
A6: George and Lennie are going to work on a ranch near Soledad because they were run out of Weed. They obtained jobs at the ranch as there were men whom had recently left.

A9: George decides to spend the night out by the pool because he was tired and hungry and he had travelled far enough for one day, because he liked it there too.

Q10: Describe what happens with the mouse, what does the incident show us about the relationship between George and Lennie?
A10: The incident shows that Lennie does not always understand why George does some things, Lennie does not understand that it is not just out of spite. George cares for Lennie, but shows this in an unusual way.

Q11: What happened in Weed?
A11: Lennie wanted to feel a ladies vibrant red dress, he touched it and then clung to it like a baby to its mother, Lennie does not understand simple requests such as “let go”, Lennie clung on tighter to the dress, the woman stated this to be rape or abuse and the people of Weed ran Lennie out of town, George had no part in this incident, yet felt responsible for Lennie and stick by his fiend in a time of need.

Q12: Write about George and Lennie’s plans for the future?
A12: George and Lennie's plans for the future are to get a house with rabbits (all different colours) and a patch of alfalfa so that Lennie can tend to them. George promises Lennie that the first chance he gets he will get Lennie a puppy, the reason for this is that Lennie pets mice too hard. Lennie is pleased by George’s promise and is enthusiastic about the dream.
