To know a little bit about most things as opposed to knowing almost all there is to know about one or two...
In my job as a taxi driver, I encounter many different people in many different states of mind, from the euphoric who might have just got married or 'got a girlfriend' to the depressed who might have problems at home or lost their job...
I've got a good ear for listening and if I had to have a nickname it would be Icebreaker as I make a point of opening a conversation with everyone who gets in my cab..
Most people are friendly and chat during their journey..there are a small number that don't talk and they are the ones who concern me a little..
Why you ask? They could be the ones who don't want to pay..they could even be a psychopath in your back seat..although that's rare..
Anyway as a taxi driver it's useful to be prepared for any eventuality...

An analogy for you...
If everything you did throughout your life was a plate of food, politeness would be a side salad and viewing communication with others as 'idle chat' a dish you didn't like even though you had never tasted..

I talk non stop in taxi's when I'm drunk (which is usually when i'm in a taxi to be honest, if I wasn't drunk i'd have the good sense not to waste my money!) but when i'm sober i'm really quiet cus the only questions I can think to ask is "Been busy?" and "What football team do you support?"

Hi Kenny...You're a typical customer to me.
I work the night shift..I chose to because it's a better proposition than struggling through the traffic every day.
I've lost count of the number of times I'm asked if 'I've been busy?' together with 'what time you on till?'
It's a source of amusement since Peter Kay highlighted it as the most common conversation in a taxi...

Football? Well invariably I've got football on my radio a match or a phone in, it's a vice of mine..and a good conversation starter...
I support Manchester United, have done since I was a kid and this can disqualify me from getting a tip sometimes as there are plenty who support arch rivals Liverpool..

I'm happy to talk to anyone and like it when taxi drivers start a conversation with me, as long as it isn't them asking me weird questions. It gives me something to do

Everyone here in Stirling supports either Rangers or Celtic. As an Aberdeen fan I cannae stand either of them.

Here's a couple of amusing scenarios I've witnessed on a weekend night..

A young couple get in the back of my car and I drive..They're both worse for wear and the guy is slobbering all over the girl, who's wearing a skirt up to her waist almost...

The guy tells her he has always fancied her and there is noone else..she bites (not literally)

I have a little smile to myself because I've picked this guy up the week before, with a different girl..

Only last Saturday night I picked up a young couple and the guy was doing his level best to convince her to go to his place, which was just round the corner, for a coffee and a chat...
He asked me to stop by the cash machine and jumped out. Thinking it was in the bag so to speak he stood round the corner to relieve himself.
Meanwhile the girl left sitting in the car said to me "Can we do one?'
I asked if she was sure and she was so I pulled away at speed leaving no doubt a disappointed suitor with his fate in his own hands...
She gave me a two pound tip and couldn't thank me enough for saving her... It was a bit like something from a James Bond movie..except I didn't get the girl ha ha ha ha
