Right, most of you will have noticed I posted a topic saying I'd started a new job!
The job is working in a residential home, a caare worker, helping people with dementia and general old age etc. So far this week I've been working from 7am till 3pm, and in that time, tea break is 5 min's and lunch is 10 min's.
Other han that time we're not allowed to sit down and rest our feet. So naturally my feet are usually aching by the end of the day. Last night I got back from work and I was in agony. I had 3 foot massages off my partner, 2 foot soakes, some deep heat rub rubbed into my feet, nothing's helped, and it's resulted in me having to take a day off today,I feel awful!
I really want this job but having a day off within the first week of starting. I know I've upset my boss, and I keep thinking I've upset my partner, even though he says I havn't! I got in touch with the local doctors and they've recommended I take pain killers and it should ease off. I know I havn't been sacked (yet) and I'll be going in tomorrow, but I'm scared I'm wussing out on everything.
I feel awful I really do, I want to make people happy and I really want this job, but I couldn't walk this morning full stop, doing my teeth was agony!
Has anyone else ever gone through something like this? were you yelled at by your boss?
Sorry for the rant but I'm feeling so down in the dumps and miserable and I have no one but all you brill' people here to talk to me. | |

Mega Über-Meister 3451 points | Hi there becky.
Sorry to hear about your problems. That sounds like awfully long hours with so little time off for breaks. That can't be right, surely?
Anyway, you rant all you like. We all do it in here, don't we! |

Über-Monkey 52129 points | If your ill, you ill. Theres nothing they can do about it. And although they cant actually sack you for having time off, it can go against your favour being off so quickly after starting a job.
I used to get really aching feet when i worked in retail, being on my feet alday. You will get used to it. If I did it now, it would kill me, im so used to being sat at a desk. But you will get used to it. Do as the doctor says and take painkillers to help. I wouldnt stay off your feet too long, could make it worse.
As for your job, working those hours you are legally intitled to a longer break. I suggest you pull your manager up about it, and more so if he starts getting s**tty with you about having today off. If you are unsure of anyhting like break times etc, go and speak to someone at the CAB |
treebee UM - BONGO Über-Administrator 160343 points | Takes a while to get used to being on your feet all day and to be honest i know how it works in the care profession, new people will always be expected to work thier arses off while older staff piss off for a fag break. Also its not suited to everyone, its a hard job and takes a certain amount of stubborness to overcome the initial shock.
Dont worry about the day off, however if you find the job is making you miserable, persue another career. |

Über-Minister 17434 points | Sorry to hear you're struggling so much you neede to take a day off in your first week.
There are legal entitlements to rest breaks but before you start quoting the law, speak to your boss, explain the pain in your feet and how distressing that is for you. I'm guessing they will have had some experience with that sort of thing and may have some good tips on how to deal with being on your feet for so long. It may also be the case that they didn't realise you were getting such short breaks, you're new there so your breaks are probably not the first consideration as I'm sure it's a pretty busy place.
Whatever the outcome don't feel guilty if it doesn't work out.
Here's a link that might help you understand your entitlement to rest breaks Rest Breaks |

Minister 10645 points | I rang my boss up earlier on after the nurse had explained an ideal way of getting over the pain and she said that comfy shoes are the secret! And I thought that my gym trainers were the comfiest thing known on earth...I mean I use them to run on treadmills for gods sake!
I thought that some standard work shoes would be comfy, flat soled, and padded...they still hurt...
I know of a co-worker who agrees that the breaks are too short, and the mager's were the ones who created the break times...I don't think there's a way to change the times. When I spoke to my boss earlier she didn't seem happy with me having had the day off full stop. She was very short...not shouting, but very short with what she said!
I rang her up again after the nurse had spoken to me and she was eager to get off the phone, when I said "I will be in tomorrow" she said "right....bye then" and that was it, I even asked "7am yeah?" no reply but a dialling tone
I did't meean to upset and I guess this is why I'm feeling so awful! I feel like I've let everyone at work down |

Über-General 540 points | You will get use to standing on your feet. It will also might help to exercise.
you might not realize exercising actually makes your legs stronger and you will feel better standing and walking. |
